Do you remember when Perry Stone came to KSJO? (and how he announced it)

I didn't hear it on air, but I understand that back when KOME and KSJO were big rivals and close in the ratings, Perry Stone went to a KOME remote broadcast (is that the term?) and got on the air. He went there on a mission to do that and it worked. KOME wanted regular people to say something on the air. Perry seemed like a "regular person". He had the right look and or attitude so he was chosen. It was live and he took that opportunity to announce that he's the new on air (morning drive?) person at KSJO starting (insert date).
Anyway, how do you feel about that? I guess everyone at KSJO thought it was pretty clever, but I'm not sure. Never have been and never will be in the business, but I think maybe that's just wrong. For one pro to do that to other pro's. It's too easy.
OK, I'm a butcher. Suppose a grocery store has a grand opening. A huge event in the parking lot. A band, an MC, interviews, prizes, coupons and some dufoos from another company sneaks in and says something about their store. That would be double ungood. There are certain things you just don't do. Don't speak at a funeral if you want to down talk the deceased. Things like that. And things like what Perry did. No?
 
Blazy and Bob, the KOME morning show were doing a live remote broadcast and Perry Stone arrived with a cake for them. They put him on the air and he told the KOME audience he was the new morning man at KSJO.
 
Back in those days, it was fun. To one up the other. It happened all the time.
But I hope Bob and Blazy were on their toes and turned it around.
I didn't hear it, but as a pro, they should have been able to turn the tables
and really thump KSJO at their own game.

Ok, sounds good to me. thanks. Sounds like both stations expected that sort of thing from each other and it was "anything goes, all is fair in love and war. It's business. no hard feelings, we'll get you back".
But I don't think for example a KGO guy/lady would do that to KSFO or vice versa. I mean if the stations were owned by different companies in a different building.

Radio was the land of the prank and psych-out-the-competitor stuff.

-A station that tanked in the ratings got a funeral wreath from the winner.
-Station vans stop, guys hop out, and dig through the trash in the competitor's dumpster.
-Your mobile billboard or van circles the other station's concert.
-Your crew starts throwing your T shirts to people at the other station's concert.
-Your crew puts promo material under the wiper on cars at the other guy's concert.
-You rent the building wall that can be seen from the competitor's studio and put up something offensive to the other station on the billboard.
-The other station is presenting a big artist, but they get off the plane with your morning guy who has flown in with the artist (back in days before jetways).
-While the other station has a concert, you track their music in a "free concert."

That's just a few of the ones I have done. In return, I have gotten things ranging from dead chickens to a donkey penis.

In general, the idea was that you would be prepared for that kind of stuff, but the other station might get obsessed with you and not their own product.

The most famous example I know of making a competitor lose it was the spectacular fall from dominant first in audience and billing of WRBQ in Tampa when the Power Pig played mind game after mind game on them, and they lost focus and eventually had to change format.

Not exactly. When BA Hall of Famer Don Sherwood at KSFO was involved, the unexpected and unconventional was ALWAYS expected. In fact, Sherwood regularly called Frank Dill's morning show at KCBS to zing him with whatever came to mind...
