Do you think a new format needed in the burgh?

I say yes maybe a jackfm. And maybe a chr-pop like the one in philly q102 if pittsburgh get a station like that i would listen. I did at one time liked 961kiss but not anymore.
______________

NO!

WE HAVE 94,000 JACK FMS ALREADY!!!!!!!

There is one in Wheeling!

There is one in Greensburg!

There is one in Pittsburgh!

I'm sure there is one in every other town down any highway you choose!

All the format is is a way to get rid of the DJs and take away responsibility in programming!

Cut costs and lower quality! THAT'S IT!

Maybe it is a good way for someone young like you to get familiar with all types of music. Maybe it is a nice way for us to break down the walls of our musical- and cultural tastes- so we can be more open minded in our lifestyles.

But that's if anyone is listening! And I don't know- I don't really want to have to listen through 40,000 Mariah Carey type-songs to get to my beloved AC/DC!!!!!

BOB? JACK? IT'S ALL THE SAME!!!

Sheesh!

And as you said- we have now FOUR stations in the market with the format- which seems to have "FAD" written all over it and if it ISN'T a fad is a horrifying trend for the industry because it will literally kill so many DJ jobs and take away responsibility in programming.

I can't IMAGINE wanting to advertise on that station. I'm flipping my dial and I hear a song I like. I stay.

The very next song comes on- I don't like it- I push the button.

If I am listening to a rock station I know that even if a song I don't particularly care for is on I can tough it out and get to the next one.

If I listen to AC/DC, then I hear Mariah Carey, I'm not waiting around to hear Billy Joel and the ad.

STUPID QUESTION RADIO?

Where a 20 something man asks "Do we need more JACK stations" until ALL of the stations go to that format.

Muslim extremists get the bomb and start hitting South Park? Does not matter. We are all on automation playing The Knack after Snoop Dogg. Only those watching PCNC will survive.

In this rubbled, devestated earth, with only a handful of survivors, we are left with one radio station- KDKA.

Which will play country after polkas with its one DJ- offering no guidence on how to combat our nuclear contamination, but instead taking to the air to ocassionally ask-

"Do we need another radio station to play JACK?"

What pittsburgh does not have 4 adult hits radio stations WLTJ and WSHH is soft rock but wltj has added music so i say in between hot ac and ac. But anyway star1007 is the only vareity station that plays mainly 80s through today and i here they are adding 70s music too.
______________

BOB? JACK?

I don't disagree that if you have a Jack and a Bob, that's plenty of Variety- type formats. No market can really have 4 or 5 of them, you are right about that (for most, one will do).

I do not believe the format is a "fad", however. It's working in most markets where it's on. And, the "it'll kill the industry 'cuz it's killing DJ jobs" is a bit of an over-reaction. Most V.H. stations haven't put jocks on because the listeners have not really cried out for personalities. Some do, however, and seem to be doing well (Phoenix, St. Louis, Louisville and a few others). I'm on record as saying eventually most of these stations will and should work in some sort of personality component but the tough pill to swallow is that if listeners are saying, "hey, I kind of like this music mix and I like it without the typical DJ blabbing", then we should fulfill their demands and expectations.

The only jocks who should fear any "jockless" format should be those who are marginal in talent and attitude. Jerry Butler's "only the strong survive" sentiment was true and holds true with radio formats as well as personalities.

maybe, maybe not

Perhaps the more constructive question would be: "what format is not on the air in Pittsburgh that there's likely a demand for"?

Just putting a "new format" on for the sake of doing so would probably result in disaster. Just thinking up some new format that may not be in demand or wouldn't be competitive would be a waste of time and money.

What's missing on your radio dial? Or, what format is being done so badly that it could be challenged?

90's and now

A 90's and now station would be clutch...just like Q104 in Cleveland or WKDD in Akron

Here's the thing--a 90s and now station (like Q104 and WKDD) is essentially the pop hits station. Hardly any hip-hop, or alternative (you're lucky if it gets past Oasis and some Red Hot Chili Peppers).

There's no way a 90s rap, rock, pop station is going to fare well. They are diverse formats that never shared an audience in the 90s. Alternative then was alternative for a reason. Originally, it was alternative to hair abnds; then it was alternative to the pop crap put out then (Proclaimers, Hootie, Sophie B. Hawkins, Madonna). And rap was never on the pop stations in the 90s--it was on rap stations, and the wall between those audiences was vast, wide, and high.

Variety is nice, but we can't fool ourselves into thinking this is the 60s and 70s where top 40 radio was a bit of everything. The 90s had multitudinous radio formats and commercial music product was tailored to those formats.

Snoop to Oasis to AC/DC to Proclaimers to Mariah Carey to Dr. Dre is all a dream world fantasy, or an iPod playlist, or a college station. But it is not the real world of commercial radio.

Good Post Johnny. I like how you put that in perspective:) I think Star would do well with the 90's and now format since we now have so many other Pittsburgh radio stations that plays 80's music.
