Doc Thompson Lands On His Feet

Former WLW host Doc Thompson is now with WXYT in Detroit, a CBS station. Is CBS a better company than Clear Channel? Having worked for both I'd say HELL YES! Is Detroit a better city than Cincinnati? Never lived in Detroit but I doubt it's better than the Queen City. If you're interested in contributing to the "Doc Thompson Defense Fund" to help him buy a gun to keep him safe in his new locale....oh nevermind... Good luck Doc!

WXYT also is a sports station. Interesting. I know not everyone here liked Doc, but good for him. No one deserves what happened to him, especially when it did.

Doc's former boss at WRVA, Jimmy Barrett, was with WXYT before going to WRVA. Methinks somebody made a few calls...

One area where Detroit beats Cincinnati by a landslide is FOOD. People in metro Detroit actually season food with something other than salt & pepper, and don't consider crappy chains like "Applebee's" and "Perkins" to be "good restaurants" ... at least Doc will get his taste buds back. :p

Doc will have uphill battle. Detroit is a place that's hard to understand unless you're a native.

So is Cincinnati. It's one of the most provincial cities around.
Thanks for the clarification earlier. I was unaware 1270 had dropped sports; I haven't been to Detroit in some time.

Maybe, but they don't have Skyline! :p

Weirdly, the only thing I miss about Cincinnati when I'm away for a while is the food. I'd be at school in NE Ohio, craving a coney or some Graeter's, and none of my friends knew what I was talking about.

I'll enjoy listening to Doc, up here.
He certainly landed UP on his feet.

The question is, what does his wife do? Can she get a gig up here in the D?

The article I saw said he was going to commute between Dayton and Detroit (a route I know too well) It's about 3 1/2 hours (without Weather or Construction)

What good news for DOC! I was so pi@@ed when the Chicken s@@ts fired him ON HIS HONEYMOON! I wish him well. I was not a faithful listeners of his, but I listened often enough, I thought, to at least have a favorable opinion of him. I thought he was a work horse, doing two shows per day. His thanks was to be fired on his honeymoon. Best of luck DOC!

Doc will need to warm up a bit in his demeanor to get a following in Detroit. I realize he was working for ego city in Cincy, where everything is designed to make waves, but he sounded really angry here, unlike his work at WRVA and filling in for Beck. No doubt he was being coached by the ego boys here and he wasn't a fit. Detroit is the home of hosts like J.P. McCarthy, Dick Purtan, Paul W. Smith, etc. Guys like Willie would be run out of town on a rail in seconds. And, no, he won't find Skyline (Dixie's better anyway), but he will find a lot to like at American Coney Island, National Coney Island and Leo's (best Greek salad anywhere...hold the beets, please)...not to mention a lot of great ethnic neighborhood delights that this town is sadly missing.

Detroit radio...broadcasting to more abandoned and boarded up houses than any other market in America!
;D

Detriot...less bling, more Bing!
:D

Detroit...formerly "the motor city", now the "motor out of here city"!
:p

Stop me, somebody stop me!!!

Someone has to say it: absolutely no one in Detroit listens to 1270 WXYT anymore! The talk format so far has been an abysmal failure. Check the Arbs and look far, far down the list. The station grabbed better numbers when it was still rebroadcasting 97-1 The Ticket most of the time.

Most stations in Dayton have a higher cume than 1270 WXYT!

I wish Doc and Yuna well. It's going to be an uphill battle for WXYT..I listened to one day of Doc's first week for 45 minutes and not one phone call. WJR is still a powerhouse, and isn't he up against the "Tuesdays with Morrie" guy?

Stuck in Detroit traffic on Friday, i decided to listen to Doc.
Not bad. Pretty enjoyable. No lack of callers, either.

Just peeked at the Detroit ratings. OMG they're #34 in the market 12+ and the #6 news/talk station! My dog has a bigger audience when she barks in the backyard!!! Maybe Doc is what they need to grab some ears!
