Doc Thompson Lands On His Feet

I don't know much about Detroit, but I did a little research. WXYT was WXYZ, which created both the "Lone Ranger" and the "Green Hornet", so don't count him out yet.

Being from Detroit, you get used to the same old cracks, and how it comes up over a talk-show host, I don't get it. but, let me say this. If you were apart of the " get a gun for Doc" thing, he won't need it. he will be in the 'burbs. he will be fine. as for the radio show- the whole purpose of this thread, while WXYT doesn't have the biggest audience, and the signal isn't that great. I wouldn't say he's coming here for nothing. Talk radio 1270 is relatively new, so they are still getting their footing. they benefit from Red Wings and Tigers games being on the station and commercials on their FM counterpart, which has plenty of ears here right now. This station was talk until they went to sports in 2001 once they got the Red Wings and Tigers, and 97.1 began their sports reign on this frequency before they went to FM(I hope that makes sense, sorry if it doesn't).in conclusion, Doc has a shot. I felt bad about how he got let go in cincy, and was happy to see he was coming here.

Here is a comical story. 1270 was angling to get the Red Wings from WJR, years ago. Mike Illich the owner (of Little Ceasars Pizza fame). Mike wanted the Wings to be on a 50KW station. Well, as you know, WXYT built that facility. But, its coverage is so goofy, the D/A so inefficient, that they were better off staying with the Southfield site and at 5KW. Part of their problem is the
municipality that they located the new site in, restricted their tower height. I think that is why they originally added 97.1 to the mix. Jock Fritz was the guy that bought 1270 from ABC many moons ago. It was talk for years. He was one of the first Rush Limbaugh affiliates.

ahhh Jock Fritz. I used to work for his son Jack in Parkersburg, WV. Jack sold us, bought some stations in Sonoma and I've lost track of him since. Good times, good times.

Seems like Chuck and Jock were the "one-two punch" at WXYT.

I liked them. Detroit radio was pretty cool because the market still had a few of us "Indys".

Independent owners..... a dying breed.

jry, I looked up an article on why the Tigers left 760 and your point seems spot on. in the article, it says WXYT offered the Tigers and Red Wings a six year, $50 million dollar contract. if 1270 wanted to get the Tigers, that was one way to do it. and 97.1 was added to the mix in 2007 when the Tigers and Red Wings re-upped with CBS Radio. quick question though: what parts of town does 1270 come in good at? the Tigers and Red Wings ended up here for select Pistons games this season, so someone has to get this signal...somewhat.

The 1270 signal, from Downriver Detroit (where all of the blow torch tower sites are located) has some real holes.
They totally lost the fringe areas of the 7 county metro. The western burbs come to mind. I'd have to drive around again to refresh my memory. I baled on them, long ago, when they added the 97.1 simulcast. There was no need to try and pick up 1270. I only tuned back in to specifically listen to Doc.
