Documentary about the former 107.9 The End is nearly complete!

I am the director of a documentary about the former 107.9 The End! Entitled "The End of the World As We Knew It"-it is a retrospective look at that station and the originality it brought to the market, as well as look at how the 1996 FCC Regulation Act has effected local radio, not just in Cleveland but everywhere. With all the talk of stations switching formats in Cleveland as as well as the news of Rovers K-Rock departure today, it almost seems more and more appropriate. Here is the link to the myspace page

Very kewel! Look forward to it...except the parts with Verlane in them. ;)

Rover's leaving KRock is just radio business as usual. That sort of thing has been happening for 50 years in this business. Had CBS re-signed him he most likely wouldn't be leaving.

Back in 1958, Pete "Mad Daddy" Myers - who was a top-rated jock of the period - left WJW-AM to go to emerging Top 40 giant WHK-AM. WJW enforced a 90-day noncompete - which Myers eluded (to an extent) with a skydiving publicity jump. WJW couldn't survive his departure, and turned to MOR a year later, shortly after Myers went to New York.

And just like Rover did in Chicago, when Pete "Mad Daddy" Myers went to New York he couldn't match the success in Cleveland and eventually ended up taking his own life. [Not that Rover would off himself]

From what I had heard about "Mad Daddy" he was a bizarre person to begin with. Rover sounds to me like he's a little more down to earth. I would think the radio industry itself nowadays keeps their employees' feet on the ground with all it's uncertainty.

The End wasn't THAT great. It just happened to be around when the rise of the whole New Rock/4 Non Blondes big hat wearin' 20 lip piercings Alternative, Seattle thing was going on. I still lived up there & was sad when Power 108 switched. If they could've just boosted that signal out of the Heights they would've done better. As it is the Blazin' Hip Hop & R&B ain't doin' too shabby in 6th with a 5.2. Back then wasn't 92.3 still a CHR as WRQC before the mainstream, er, X-treme ::) days or did it go as Jammin 92, then Jammin Oldies, then X-Treme?

Here's the timeline:
92Rock (AOR WLYT: 1983 AND new wave WRQC: 1983-1986)
92Q (Top 40 WRQC 1986-1990)
Jam'n 92 (Rhythmic CHR WJMO-FM: 1990-1993 and WZJM: 1993-1999)
92.3 The Beat (Jammin' Oldies WZJM 1999-2001)
92.3 Xtreme Radio (WXTM: 2001-2005)
923X (WXTM: 2005-2006)
92.3 K-Rock (WXRK: 2006-2007, WKRI: 2007, WKRK: 2007-present)

And yes, I did check out the myspace page. Cool... and I did request ya guys. Good luck with the doc.

The End's signal is stronger on the east side, so it's natural the crack hop format would do well. Whereas the alternative format isn't big amonst blacks. Yes there are alt loving whites on the east side...but not enough to sustain a format. Same for clients.

The End on say... 106-5. Now it has a shot.

These days classic alternative or adult alternative is where the $$$ is, if combo'd with a classic rock or adult hits.

92-3 was #6 P12 plus before flipping to Jammin Oldies. What a colossal failure that was . Should've stayed CHR. Had Scott Free (now OM/PD/Mornings in Elmira NY) in AM drive and Tim Virgin (now with WHFS,,or is it DC101?) in PM Drive.

Nathan...how do you know all that you do? I worked Cleveland radio 1994-00 (and am a history buff as well) and don't remember most of it. How do you? I mean that with all sincerity. Amazing!

Nathan...with knowlege like that maybe you can answer this: 1980-82ish WGCL had a guy named Jim King & Chico the Wonder Dog. Ever hear them or know what may have happened to them> They did AM drive before Phil Gardner's Superstars, which later became the G-Team.

Hey, Mr. Peabody, let's jump in the Wayback Machine and go to the late 70s when 107.9 was WDMT and played Disco.....anybody remember when it was doing that? Probably not, the ratings were abysmal at best. Chris Quinn had left before I had arrived but I only survived a few months and was outta there before they changed the format to their first attempt at an Urban format. Signal wasn't very good back then at least down in the Medina county/southern Summit county area and didn't miss the drive from southern Medina county all the way out to the middle of Geauga county. I still have a bunch of the 12" vinyl singles from there.

WDMT is mentioned early in the doc!

I vaguely remember DMT...2 notches down was WBEA, B-107(still have a bumpersticker with a bumblebee on it, then it went Z-Rock, then the Wave( I THINK that's how it went).
Back to 107.9 around 89-90 when it was still The All New Power108 at the top of the dial"...I remember Cat Thomas...what were some of the other jocks? Didn't Maria Farina do a stint there? With atat killer Mitch Craig imaging package"Power 108...comin' in through your ear... & takin' over your braaaiiinnn". :D

Big Steve Kelly, Cat Thomas, Maria Farina, John Landecker, Jim Bosh, Gina St. John, Rick Michaels, Paul Phillips, Scott James, (aka Harry Legg) Mark Allen, Dave Stone, Ed Brown, Yo! Sunny Joe all come to mind

...and in their legal ID - "A GREAT CITY BY A GREAT LAKE"

"92 WRQC" was top 40 by fall 1983, because the first song of my first shift in January, 1984 was "Joanna" by Kool & The Gang. It was "92Q" in time for my second go-around there in December 1985 (complete with "chime time" and Rick Sklar).

I believe Jim King from WGCL passed away a few years ago.

Dave Stone from Power 108 was also Dave Sharp from 92Q and WGCL.

JbC

I remember when Dave Sharp was also on Lite Rock 106 1/2 for a while after 'GCL flipped around 89-90 with Cleveland After Dark-listening to the hokey calls on my way home from OSB at night. Sunday Nights WLTF also had "New Age Cleveland". I have a tape somewhere but forget who hosted it. "Light Rock...Less Tock"
