Does anyone else like watching those TIME LIFE infomercials?

I love em! Half hour of snippets of music of the past.

" The following is a paid advertisement of TIME LIFE's Your Music series........................"

Yeah! So far my favorite is the one hosted by Greg Brady doing the 70's music.

I have to laugh...I spent about 20 minutes last night watching Regis Philbin sell the Dean Martin Variety show series DVD set...Guthy Renker, not Time Life. It was fun seeing the clips of Dean's show, though I'm not interested enough to shell out any $$$ for the DVDs.

The clips were fun, and the infomercial included an interview with Greg Garrison, the show's producer, who had a lot of Dean stories to share. I'd say it was more entertaining than the regular shows on TV last night.

Even though I think informericals are pretty worthless...I do find myself stopping and watching those shows selling the Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, and Carol Burnett shows. I wouldn't really spend the money to buy them, but the informericals themselves aren't bad. I even remember from a few years ago, they were selling I Love Lucy DVD sets.

I'll admit to watching them when they're on as I slid through the channels. I don't think I'd ever actually purchase any of them but I would rent some from a video shop(Do these things show up in video rental places?). Yeah, they're great to watch, but how often can you do that? This is why I have purchased very few movies over the years. I have a dozen or so, but how often can you watch the same thing?

What about the split screen so that Regis is singing with Dean Martin?

Makes me long for the Natalie Cole / Nat King Cole song, 'Unforgettable'

I was watching the infomercial for the 'Air Supply' collection and thinking, "has it really come down to this with you two guys?" Of course, if they own a major piece of their music and the masters (and it looks like they do given their energy level and smiles) then it's a good gig for them.

But I have to admit a certain guilty pleasure in watching the Time-Life 'Best of (whatever decade or genre)" CD collections. The producers manage to pull together some great archival footage for them (if you don't mind the scrolling song titles). A couple of great T-L infomercials come to mind; the one with John Sebastian selling a best of folk music and another with a former Brady Bunch cast member selling a best of the 70's.

Of course, I guess the 'doo-wop' and similar concerts that PBS airs are really a kind of extended infomercial. But don't tell them that.

T.J. Lubinski does a good job with those PBS telethon concerts. Although I caught one program of 70's acts using film from the earlier Disco Explosion concert. A little recycling and hoping the public wouldn't notice?
