Does anyone else think it is odd to put Nascar on Project 961?

It just struck me as odd, since Nascar is typically a Country Music fare. I hope CC isn't doing something to Project but the morning show has been kidding for the last few months that they may not have jobs soon. Now that they are promoting the race in Atlanta will be broadcast on there it worries me. I like the morning show and don't want them to lose their jobs, they aren't contrived and rehashed a million times like the regular guys.

It's a decision driven by $$$. Lots of it tied into Nascar and Project isn't even close to hitting it's budgets this year.

This does sound odd because if country is here to stay on 94.9, they should have put it there.

If Project isn't hitting their budgets, they could still make about as much by voicetracking most of the airshifts outside of drivetime, or even going jockless. There's not a lot of competition there outside of drivetime.

I know many will disagree with me, but probably means country will replace 96.1 and Groove will move to 94.9 on Labor Day weekend. 105.7 The Buzz, anyone?

huh. Why move country to 96.1fm? The signals for 96.1 and 94.9 are virtually identical.

I could see Project or at least a rock format moving to 105.3 or 105.7 since its not making enough money to stay on 96.1fm. Patron won't be moving to one of the 2 prime signals. The Groove website does not have a frequency and its possible it is moving to 105.3 or 96.1fm. Maybe a similar formated station will actually debut on a bigger signal.

As long as CC owns WGST they are not going to invest in the station to make it competitive again. I could see CC launching a hole new talker on FM since the WGST brand is ruined. They would move Rush,Beck and Ramsey over.

Could it just be a one race deal on Project since the race is in Atlanta? Not the first time Project and NASCAR had a tie in with each other, but the first time a race to be aired on 96.1. No format change necessary at 96.1.

Makes as much sense as Georgia Tech on oldies 106. Beer, babes and bubba (doesn't that pretty much describe 96.1 and Nascar)?

I wonder if NASCAR or one of the two radio networks that cover the races (except Brickyard 400) is paying CC so there is something for the fans in grandstands to listen to? When my wife and I use to go to Martinsville for both races we had headphones with the race on for ear protection and because you could not hear the track announcer. Or for as another thread suggests, if The Grove ends up on 96.1 what better way to stunt than to get paid to run the race and drive away a large number of The Project’s Listeners. After all this is CC Atlanta who blew up Peach / Lite.

NASCAR Fan = Country radio listener? Come on guys! That's one of the oldest and most generalized stereotypes in marketing. Ex: Do you really think all AFLAC policy holders are exclusive country radio listeners?

Sure, a NASCAR broadcast wouldn't be in context on B98. However, in the present state of terrestrial radio, when it comes to a revenue generating, appointment based listening feature you have to consider it for formats outside the obvious stereotype. IF and that's the big one - IF - NASCAR radio produces premium revenue beyond regular programming.

There is a revenue problem with NASCAR radio:

#1 TV (boring!) Sorry IMHO DW on Fox is bad
#2 NASCAR is trying to become more of a “national” sport with more races outside of the Southeast which has alienated some of NASCAR’s die hard fans.
#3 The Car of Tomorrow has made the racing very boring. Bristol has reworked the track and now even this race is boring.
#4 The lack of personalities and rivalries. These 20 something racers have not had time to built up fan bases. There use to be a tremendous #24 verses #3 rivalry. Dale is dead and Jeff has “lost” his winning ways.

IMHO these reasons are why NASCAR Radio doesn’t have a full season afflicted in the “capitol” of the Southeast: Atlanta. There are a couple of “fringe” / rim shot signals but not a station with a signal that can cover most of the market. The South 107 move in could help but that has not happen yet. I kind of thought that one of the AM’s would pick it up (680, 1010 or 790) but with more and more races being ran at night that is not going to work. WSB 750 could to it, but Boortz would have a heart attack. (I think he is wrong about the tobacco chewing Red Neck Stereo types.) Cox has 95.5 97.1 and 98.5 to handle Bull Dog conflicts. I guess they do not feel the can not make it work financially. Cox has had lots of sports on in the past (Hawks, Braves) so they will go after a dollar just like any other broadcaster. Radio has become “just another business” and if somebody could make a “buck” NASCAR would be on the radio in Atlanta fulltime.

Everybody I've ever talked to about it since I moved to Atlanta two and a half years ago has told me that Atlanta is an isolated island of East Coast urbanity located within the Southeast. It appears to me, based on the people I meet and the accents I hear, that Atlanta is in the Southeast, but not of the Southeast.

Where I live in Gwinett, people who could be described as "Southerners" are a distinct minority. The major groups of people I encounter on a daily basis are either transplanted Yankees or immigrants from Asia or Latin America.
