Does anyone enjoy the Planet Mikey Show ?

As terrible, boring and embarassing as it is to listen to these jerks humiliate themselves every other night, its hard to listen to this show. You kind of wish the number one sports station in the country would have someone on at night thats knows something about sports and didnt rely on his sidekicks or his brainless producers and his 1960s jokebook. but does anyone else notice they seem to take alot of payola, always eating for free or even plug things for garb. i mean what is the rule on that these days? i left radio years ago when i realized it was no way to make a real living, i make more pumping gas these days, but i still like to see what goes on in the business. anyone have any insight on why EEI even keeps this show around when they seem to always have a game on and pay Mikey spend the night drinking himself stupid?

It's supposed to be a fun show. Poking fun at things they think need poking! If you don't enjoy their humor, there's always another station to turn to. I think Mike is a great talent. Used to watch him on NECN and followed him to EEI.

Ted Sarandis did a more "serious" sports show and it was tedious. It's a shame Mikey has to act like a buffoon on his show because he does know his stuff. There has to be a happy medium. I like the late night shows after the games, though.

I'm usually watching TV by the time he comes on. I've always liked him though. He never takes himself too seriously, which at WEEI is rare.

All of the hosts on WEEI flaunt their payola; cars, clothes, food, you name it. I don't blame them for accepting stuff, but I don't think it's a good idea to brag about it. For instance everybody hates Meterparel as it is. When he flaunts his freebies, people are even more resentful. I'm surprised that station management doesn't tell them to keep quiet.

I haven't listened in a while, but Mustard and Johnson used to give free ads to some auto repair shop almost every week. If I were someone actually paying for ads, I'd be pretty annoyed about that. It's one thing to praise Dunkin Donuts coffee, because they spend a ton of money advertising.

I think Mikey does a good job. He's a little too goofy sometimes...but he does know his stuff. At least he takes callers and seems to interact well with them. But I can see how he could be an aquired taste for some.

Ouch!
After reading this, the Jealousy-O-Meter went off and turned green with envy.

Hmmm, Mikey gets to play, talk sports, get freebees
(called endorsements/product placement)
drive a cool car and take home some nice coin.

How was your evening? ::)

agreed.

mikey does have talent, but that yahoo act is too much sometimes.

i do like john ryder and lenny megs. although, i do tire of listening to them say john ryder is in bumpass virginia or someplace like that every night.

oh i forgot to add...i really, really, really hate the 'email female' concept.

hey! lets bring in a 19 year old girl so a 55 year old man can fawn all over her! great, exciting radio!

If you disclose it on the air, it's perfectly legal.

Uh...um...gee, that's a tough one.

WAIT! I got it! #2 in men 25-54!

They pay him to drink AND he has the #2-rated show in M25-54? Where do I sign up for that?

I'd like to give my responce.

This is the BEST radio show in Boston. Planet Mikey and his staff is very nice to listen to at night. They have interseted topics, guest, and they are on top of their game talking about Sports and Reporting.

I enjoy this show most nights and choose to listen to it most nights.

The way Mike talk, it make the listener want to listen more and more. His Producer Jpods is a very nice guy and very helpfull to his listeners. When the listener mess up or is wrong, JPod help them out by correcting the issue, as well as Planet Mikey. They are all very nice to listen to.

Thank you

So if you don't disclose that you've got a deal with someone it's illegal? I never knew that. My son-in-law, a former morning drive host in Phoenix, had a couple of nice deals. He said he promoted the product, but didn't talk about his freebies on the air.

I love ''Planet Mikey''..perfect show at night for what WEEI does..the email female thing can be a riot and laugh out loud funny..

As has been mentioned, they don't take themselves all that seriously..compared to ''The Big Show'' which I won't listen to..three guys screaming over each other is not entertaining..

So if you don't disclose that you've got a deal with someone it's illegal? I never knew that.

Good that you didn't, because it's not true. Just another myth that comes from a misreading of a regulation that requires that commercials structured to look like straight up programming be identified as commercials. An example would be the nutritional-suppliment infomercials that are formatted to look and/or sound like normal television or radio talk show.

This has nothing to do with the usual freebies passed around to talent as part of advertising deals, because obviously nobody is trying to fool anyone.

TSB

Wrong. This regulation dates from 1963 and was rewritten in 1975, long before anyone ever heard the term "infomercial." It was enacted as a response to the quiz show and payola scandals of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The language of both the law (47 USC §317) and the regulation (47 CFR §73.1212) do not contain an exemption for endorsements in advertising. It's a matter of basic honesty. The public is entitled to know when, how and why it is being persuaded. I don't often side with the FCC or Congress, but they were right on the money with this one.

You are misusing the term "Payola". Payola is when a person pays a radio station or employee, or gives them gifts, to promote their product... OFF THE BOOKS. When you hear the guys on WEEI talk about the things they receive from restaurants, auto dealers etc... it's a PAID agreement. They don't talk about Dunkin Donuts every morning because they really like Dunkin Donuts and because they're a sponsor.. they talk about Dunkin Donuts because they've been paid to do so. It's a live, un-scripted commercial.

I also hate the overnight on WEEI. JT is an a-hole and I hate is yahoo callers.
