Dear Tom and LCR (sorry, your screen name is too long to type!),
Radio CAN be fun again! I don't think anyone in Atlanta radio is going to do it, due to the money involved. I think radio is going to be best served at the small station. That is why we did what we did at WCHK. We were sitting in Atlanta's shadow, so the major formats were all covered. So we did an alternative format, added some interesting jocks (You should have heard Jack Reynolds/John Roach in the afternoons!) and some community programming. Yes, we did obits, the community calendar, and even the CHURCH calendar! We also did the Marines' Toys For Tots drive. We talked a local coffee house into donating some coffee, we got our "River Of Faith" host to stand out in the rain, and we collected toys. We covered elections by being there while the votes were counted. We covered the first day of school by having our news man on the scene. We got hot news stories by bugging the sherrif for the tips.
And I have an opening at one of my small stations for a morning man. We can't find anyone interesting, entertaining, or willing to build a show. We are building a community station at the new one as well. We do Chamber Reports (from three different Chambers), we do community calendars, we even do the lost pet report. We will be adding the boating report (it's a resort town on a lake). We cover the local high school sports by BROADCASTING thier games! We also cover the local college's sports.
Now, I can't see Dave FM doing obits. Or Rock 100.5 doing the lost pet report. But stations CAN take an interest in thier communities. And all too often, the bean counters forget that we are in the entertainment business. I think the future of radio will be the small community oriented stations. There no one gets upset if your jock talks long on a break. We can play more than 150 songs. We can try alternative formats. We can get involved.
