Does anyone know if anyone is playing Christmas music?

Since you asked:

In Boston, this past Thursday morning, WODS/Oldies 103.3 flipped to all-Christmas at 6am. And 105.7 WROR (classic hits) flipped about 10 minutes before that.

Last year, both stations flipped on Veteran's Day with Oldies at about 6am and WROR about 7am.

I have dropped both stations from my presets until December 26th...or maybe forever.

This entire industry has lost its mind.

I used to think so too. I always hated playing Christmas music. But the public seems to love it - and they're the ones that listen.

Larry is right...I have people (and sponsors) calling already wanting to know when we will start! Our traditional day is Dec. 1....but I am reconsidering....thanks JBI

Do you do a full flip or just pepper in the Christmas music a little a time? And do you flip both stations or just one? :D

We start with two songs per hour first week....Then three the remaining time until Christmas Eve.... Then 100 % until 6PM Christmas day. Seems to work well...
( keep'em wanting more)....thanks JBI

That seems like a good compromise between the Early Christmas Freaks and us Bah Humbuggers. ;)

Last year in Birmingham, I believe both AC stations went 100% Christmas music before Thanksgiving. *grr*

Checking in from Phoenix (where I live)...the Oldies station 94.5 KOOL-FM went all Christmas the day after Halloween and just a few days later AC 99.9 KESZ-FM went all Christmas too. It's the first time for CBS-owned KOOL-FM to go all Christmas and the earliest for CC KESZ-FM. No one in Jackson has ever flipped entirely to Christmas music before...right? Is MIX 98.7 a logical choice for Jackson's first all Christmas format? KOOL-FM is reminding listeners on-air that they can hear their favorite oldies streamning at the station's web site ;D

Branding for both stations;

94.5 KOOL-FM "The Valley's Home for the Holidays"

99.9 KEZ "The Holiday Station"

Now THAT is a surprise. . . .mainly because KOOL is the #1 FM station in Phoenix. Going “all Christmas” to stunt for a new format, or because sales are in the tank, is one thing, but to take the highest billing, highest rated FM and go Christmas has to be a first. Especially since there is another AC station nipping at their heels. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Didn't Mix 98.7 flip to all Christmas music about 3 years ago when it was "all the rage"? Sunny 93 WSYE usually flips around Thanksgiving.

The key to it, particularly early on, is presentation.
A straight segue into a Christmas song has a certain amount of whiplash. Stage it. Maybe two Christmas/Holiday songs back to back.
I used to like to use a subtle sounder under the intro...a holiday jingle between the two songs...and then a cold outro getting back into
regular format songs.
It if often best to go with the secular stuff early and add the religious songs later on. It also increases the "wow" factor when Joy To The World,
The Hark stuff and Silent Night come along a week or two in.
Frosty the Snowman into Silent Night is NOT good. Start with the religious tune...intro'd (staged)...then into the secular.
All free advice..worth just that...and probably out of date for today's market.

I spent a little time listening (on-line) to Christmas music stations (including KOOL). Problem is, most of the Christmas songs they played . . . I had never heard of before. On these 24/7 Christmas stations there is a tendency to breakup redundancy with unknown Christmassy fill songs. My inclination is to go download 50 good Christmas songs and be done with it.

In ref to Christmas, I wonder how many stereos and radios will wind up under the tree. . . or have these gifts gone the way of the typewriter. Not sure if they make an audio system that doesn’t have an IPOD docking station.

Finally, as an opinion, by 10AM Christmas morning. . .go back to regular programming.

What is KXY's regular format? Larry, do you have a hand in the station?

Livng in PHX also, I can also confirm Kool and 99.5 playing non-stop Christmas. I don't know what Kool's factoring was in this flip, pheraps trying to beat 99.5 to the punch? Last year about this time I recall someone on one of these boards making mention of 99.5 being on the first stations in the country to do non-stop Christmas. Let it be known I hardly ever listen to either station and have no intention of doing so until after 12/25.

As for Christmas music and markets,my thoughts are simple. If a station is in a large enough market and/or there are other stations that compete or share similar formats, then one station could flip while leaving the other to cater to us bah-humbugers (and there's more than one of us ;) In markets where there is no one to pick up the void of regular programming, I think it is good to massage Christmas in with the regular format, heck even have a all request Christmas lunch show, but just don't drop the regular programming unitl Christmas Eve. At some point on that day stations could go wall to wall Christmas and revert back to the regular format by noon Christmas day. They could keep massaging in Christmas songs for at least another couple of days and might even continue that until New Year's, at which point the holidays are over. Just my .02 cents

WKXY apparently will be unveiling a new format after Christmas.

Didn't know you lived in Phoenix. Been there a couple of times and rather enjoyed the place, except for the crusty Motel 6 I stayed at near dowtown! I heard that the dance station I heard a long time ago (Energy 92.7/101.1?) bit the dust. Do you know what they're doing now?

KEGK-FM started Nov. 1 but will go back after christmas day.

I'm not sure of the exact dates, but Mix went ALL Christmas about 2003 and didnt get the kiss most stations do. As a matter of fact, they dropped considerably 25-54. The following year, Q-105, not learning from Mix's mistake, decided to show everyone how to do it. They too had their *$$ handed to them in the Fall book. Hence, I believe the thinking is that Jackson aint an ALL Christmas market. Maybe someone will brave it again someday. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good Book!!
