Does anyone know who will be hosting the local sports talk show from 7pm-10pm on

I didn't know there was going to be a sports show. However, I like the idea of it if it's true. I would love for CBS to bring back Thor Tolo.

Tolo is working in Seattle now, although if someone did want to bring back goofy sports talk radio you'd think he might be more accepted now that Bill Cowher is gone.

Think Mark Madden might make a move?

You make a good point about Mark Madden pratte 4 life. If the Zone is going to be a man's station, Mark Madden might be a good fit for the night time sports show.

I know Mark Madden's contract at ESPN is up very soon. I wonder if the Zone would offer Mark Madden more money then he is making now.

If they get Mark Madden, heck they might as well just go with Chris Kid / Kid Chris and get it over with.

Latest I am hearing is Tom Leykis and Tom Leykis is not a sports show. Does he still occassionally "blow up" callers?

And if Madden jumps ship, would former enemy and current 1250 stablemate Stan Savran take his slot?

Feeball: Leykis' show's website is http://www.blowmeuptom.com . That should answer your question...

Who said they're doing local sports from 7 to 10? It would make no sense to constantly go up against play-by-play.

Well, Gee Boss, tell that to Myron Cope, Stan Savran, George Von Benko, Rocco Pendola, anytime an afternoon drive talker has to go up against a Pirates day game or other weekday afternoon sporting event, etc.

Cope's show was never on the air later than 8 o'clock, and that was at a time when the Pirates games started at 7:35. Savran, Von Benko and Pendola all failed miserably in later time slots, in part because they were always going against play-by-play.

The instances when an afternoon drive talk show goes against a game are the exception rather than the rule.

Wait a minute, Boss.

You can give us references to conversations John Cigna had 25 years ago about Dave Parker's bunting ability, but you don't remember that Stan Savran had a successful 8-9 talk show throughout the eighties, into the 90s, and even the early part of this decade on 1250?

Furthermore, Cope (and Bruce Keidan, for that matter) did their show from 6-9 after Savran was fired (wrongfully) in 1991.

That's nitpicking, but the fact Pirates start times did shift from 7:35 to 7:05 during the Jim Leyland era, when Cope-Keidan was still on the air and ruling local sports talk airwaves, is not.

WEAE has gone back to sports talk from 7-9 with Tim Benz, Ken Laird, and I believe even Joe Starkey in recent years.

Even Von Benko's show served a need in that time slot. Without a post-game call-in show and a host who knew nothing about baseball coming on after the Pirates on KDKA during that era, his was effectively the place you went to to talk about the game afterwards.

I understand what you're saying, but there's tons of precedence for sports talk in this time slot.

Re: Does anyone know who will be hosting the local sports talk show from 7pm-10p

The other opportunity here is that since the Pirates are going to be on 104.7, Ellis' show will be short most nights this summer. But Madden's about the only personality with enough pull to make sense. Money aside, would he want move from PM drive to nights?

They tried, they failed. The issue is ratings and revenue and it wasn't there for shows that run later in the evening. The kind of hardcore sports fans who support sports talk are watching actual sports at those hours.

There was always a huge dropoff from Cope to Savran in the golden days of 1250. The show stayed because Savran was working for the TV station and he wanted the talk show as part of his deal. The radio station didn't care because it didn't do enough business.

Von Benko used to fill those last hours playing taped interviews because he didn't get calls.

Keidan never "ruled the airwaves" in any of his stops. He kept getting shows because he was willing to go out and sell. He developed a small personal client base that kept him afloat.
