Does anyone know why Dave Ross is taking on a partner?

I don't listen regularly, maybe he talked about it on his show, or I could have missed it on some other post; anyway...has anyone mentioned why Dave Ross has partnered up on his talk show? With all the belt-tightening I've heard about, I'd think KIRO would be hesitant about adding another personality.

this is KIRO/bonneville's way of fazing in a new voice box, to compliment the grizzled veteran. the fear must be, ross is getting too long in the tooth for attracting/keeping the younger FM demographic tuned in. does this work or not? i dont know. i aint listened to ross for years. but, all the years prior ive spent listening to ross, adds up to decades. i prefer the dave ross show from the 80's, and early 90's, before it became heavy on the enternewsment. as far as luther burbank, his new co-host? i heard a few shows of this mans several years ago, and i just dont get it period! then again, im a mid 40's rural redneck, not a mid 20's urban seattle progressive hipster.
okay, 2010owner, that my blunt nickels worth. dave ross is a legend in seattle radio, and would love to read others analysis. by the way, what you own'n?

Scott,
Thanks for your insight.

I listen to Dave Ross because I just can't listen to Thom Hartman all the time...too depressing. Even for a mid 50's rural progressive.
I just don't know about Luke Burbank. I seldom follow, or agree with, his logic.
i.e. today Luke was trying to put the blame on the owner of the three Mastiffs that attacked the boy that jumped a fence to retrieve a ball. I think it is tragic. However the dog owner and the dogs are not in the wrong.

Maybe KIRO could get Ken Schramm to partner up with Dave. LOL!

Re: 2010owner
I possess a John Deere 2010 crawler/bulldozer and a 2010 row-crop tractor. (JD made 1010's, 2010's, 3010's, etc. from '61 to '65.)

This move is not being made because Dave can't carry a show alone. In fact, the opposite is true, he can. I see this more as an insurance policy that KIRO is doing everything possible to increase ratings. It really is more about the change to FM. KIRO must show the higher brass that they can make the FM transition work. If they do nothing they lose. If they try new ideas and lose, atleast they tried new ideas. It is a simple gamble to make the equation work. In the meantime, the gamble means changes for the listener. Not sure the first this has occurred in radio history. :p

I think you're right in your theory. KIRO's move to FM blew-off the bulk of their older demo and they are trying to salvage what's left by going younger (and cheaper) with the NPR kids, Radke and Burbank. The initial results look good. Let's see if it lasts post-election.

also, the main reason i quit listening to dave ross had nothing to do with left wing seattle politics. it was due to KIRO's huge commercial load, and constant repititous promos and hype. yes, we know KIRO does traffic and weather every ten minutes. yes, we know whats coming up on the dori munson show etc....... it seems all you get was about one hour of dave ross show, spread out into three hours of ads, and hyped up promos, and traffic, and news updates. this was the genius programming logic for the average quarter hour listener. so hows that been workin out ratings wise? this TSLer drifted off elsewhere to bob rivers in 01/02.

speaking of NPR. would love to hear dave ross show move to the NPR, via KUOW. now that i'd listen to, while i wrapped up my work night/day.......free from the loud static, clutter, and commercialized hype of todays KIRO.

Listened to about 15 min. of Ross & Burbank today. It's terrible. Burbank is doing his level best to make Ross look geriatric - in one bit he was trying to "school" Ross (who Burbank frequently refers to as "David") on the "new Facebook".

You don't need to school Dave Ross on technology, Luke. Ross has forgotten more than you'll ever know.

When you pair up a waif, new kid, whippersnapper against a guy like Dave Ross, there's bound to be some hidden tension.....

Dave I think is better off doing his own and Too Beautiful To Live should return to KIRO in it's old timeslot......

"Try something new?"

Wasn't that the thinking behind Burbank's jumbled night-time failure on KIRO? It was, IMO, miserable. The smarmy, smug attitude of a very UNhip hipster like Burbank is painful to listen to. If you are truly going to try something new, take the advice found in the song "Tobacco Road" -

Blow it up. Start all over again.

Why partner Ross with a proven loser? And why do changes piecemeal, one show at a time? Start from scratch with something truly new to Seattle.

I've actually listened to the two of them a few times, and found their banter and chemistry to be good. When I first heard Luke Burbank on with Ross, I thought he was a guest who was trying to take over the show, based on the amount of talking he did, and the way he spoke "authoritatively" as a host would. Then I realized it was an intentional change of the program. Give it a little time (I always hate it when traffic reporters say that). It might work on a level that's more authentic than just assuming it will add audience to KIRO-FM because a younger guy is now paired up with the old pro. Maybe they'll actually continue to have interesting things to discuss, where it's not a manufactured "devil's advocate" point-counterpoint scenario, but, instead, a real conversation. Just as long as they don't forget to include the listeners in on their discussions, and avoid the "insider club" talk among themselves that I suspect made Luke's "Too Beautiful To Live" show too awful to sit thru every night.

The Ross and Burbank thing is a shot in the direction of the two-person format. It apparently works ratings-wise with Ron and Don so why not give it a go in other time slots,,? Problem is, you have the Ross-Burbank format as radio for the limp wrists. Dave did just fine by himself..Burbank added pussification to a time slot that didnt need it. The age difference shows. Dad trying to relate to his son..It quite sucks in the listen-ability category..Burbank clearly is a mic hogger and can't seem to shut it down at times. Like Jessica..

yep, wino you added a few choice adjectives i left out in my prior post on this topic: "the pussification to a time slot that didnt need it". ha ha

i recall listening to a promo a few years ago on KIRO for this unusual thing called "too beautiful to live" with so and so. okay, so curiousity killed this cat, when i tuned into this. kinda like entering a gay bar in an unfamiliar city, and then exiting quickley as you realized your mistake!

i used to enjoy dave ross show, when he had melissa line on as a guest discussing politics. lots of left wing deep thinking analysis here, but the talk chemistry was great. would be a great talk partner w/dave.

i used to enjoy gary ryan(of ryan and ryan KBSG fame) talk shows on KIRO a few years back. very RIGHT on politically speaking, good pipes, and entertaining to listen to. but, it up and dissappeared, and we ended up with all that other stuff that makes up todays KIRO......
