Does anyone miss Howard Stern on Local Radio?

Listernership is way down compared to when he was on terrestrial radio. But thank God I taped the show like a mad man when he was on regular radio. As I continue to go through my tapes I thought I would continue to share. I found some Imus tapes from 20 years ago that I'll soon share as well. But for now..... let's go back exactly 20 years ago to October of 1988 and hear Stern at his best.

I miss him....not the last year & 1/2 or so with all of the editing/dumping that was going on; but I do miss him. You'd be silly not to....

Why not just buy a Sirius Radio then?

The LA Times article is just re-reporting old news. The die-hard fans are still around and enjoying the best show in the 16 years I've been a listener.

I sorta-kinda miss Stern too...but not enough to actually pay to listen to him, so I guess this makes me something less than a die-hard fan. ;)

My memories of Howard actually go back to his days doing afternoon drive at NYC's 660 WNBC, courtesy of my dearly departed GE Superadio I. I think what I enjoyed most about him was that subversive quality he had about him......the sense that listening to him was somehow a forbidden guilty pleasure. And, for me anyway, Robin Quivers just made the whole interaction and on-air chemistry click magically.

The period of time I missed him most was that gap between his WNBC firing, and when he re-surfaced (at night, on a time-delayed basis)...on Boston's 104.1 WBCN. The show somehow sounded even better to me then. Perhaps it was that added "Banned in Boston" factor (Howard's constant on-air complaints about being time-delayed in Boston).

By the time Howard actually got to Providence, I had been listerning to him long enough to get the sense (for me anyway)......that somehow he was starting to lose a bit of steam....the sense that the show was starting to get just a little threadbare in the creativity department. After all...how many interviews can you do with dumb supermoldels, and how many times can you play "Black Jeopardy"???. It was then that I just sort of drifted away as a listener, and never did return.

Which is why I say i just "sorta-kinda" miss him.

No, that is my opinion. The question was asked, "Do you miss Howard Stern on local radio? My personal answer is yes. I have a right to my own opinions. I never liked Howard Stern and I never listened to him.

Based on the terseness of your answer and the fact that you aren't part of the Providence board community, your agenda is fairly transparent.

And that is my opinion.

I don't forsee myself having to pay to listen to radio anytime in the future...I miss him; but not that much

Stock price closed at 48 cents today. Seems like a race to Bankruptcy between Sirius and Citadel. It's obvious that Stern was grossly overpaid to bring over subscribers, and it just hasn't worked out as well as planned. My guess is that Howard will finish out this contract, Spend a couple of years at home, get bored and then return in some form to terrestrial radio. Probably from a studio built in his house similar to the setup that Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage have.

I have 2 Sirius accounts. I got them because I am a Howard fan. I will continue to keep both accounts after he is gone. I have listened less lately. I only listen to live content. I have no interest in the "best of" type shows. The show has changed a lot in the last 2 yrs. Sometimes it's not much different than broadcast with all the ads. So much for cutting edge and commercial free.

/sigh

I've got that satellite signal beamed in here and my girlfriend can't get enough of it. I THOUGHT that I was a HUGE Howard fan. But my girlfriend has a special Radio that is only tuned into Howard and I swear that she keeps it on 24/7. My main unit transmits to all the radios in the house. Even the bathroom. No shortage of Stern here. But unfortunately he has lost some of his edge and doesn't get the big name guests like he used to. But I'm really not complaining. The show is still great.

I've loved the show since 1984. When he wasn't on here I used to take the occasional drive to Southwestern Connecticut and stay overnight at hotels just so I could tape the show from K-Rock in New York! I even moved to Rye New York at the end of 1988 and taped a bunch of programs. That is where the tape came from that I posted at the beginning of this thread. I would tape the show every morning before work.

Then I moved to Los Angeles in 1991 and taped his very first syndicated broadcast into California. I was so happy to get the broadcast. I worked in Santa Monica and the corner store where I would pick up morning juice had the show on each day. Good times!

So since I'm such a big fan you can only imagine my happiness when WBCN finally picked up the show and then Providence next. Now with Sirius beamed into my home I'm certainly not complaining. Stern's got the best damn show on the radio.... PERIOD!

Hey John,

I wonder if you have anything that the show doesn't...this was posted on some Stern fan sites within the last few months:

As massive as the Howard Stern tape archive is, there are still a few classic show/moments that are missing due to lost or damaged cassettes (or Stuttering John forgetting to flip the tape over! $&%#@&%!!!!!!!)

That’s where YOU come in…

We are looking for the following shows:
01/24/86 – Bon Jovi Dial-A-Date
02/17/86 – Howard’s first MORNING show at K-Rock
07/02/86 - Joe Walsh 1st Appearance / Leslie West phone call
09/23/86 – Sam Kinison’s 1st Appearance

If any of you out there have these specific tapes, can you please email us at: [email protected] plus send those tapes in ASAP to:

Thanks, “The Tapes” Team

Not sure if you heard Vol 1 but there was some great stuff there, from WCCC, W4 Detroit, WNBC and WWDC.

To keep this post (sort of) Providence-ified... does anyone remember the short lived Saturday morning version of the Howard Stern Show? WHJY ran it...it was totally different from the weekday show...i think it aired in the late 80's. There's no mention of this show in his books, but it was an interesting show...I think there was a live audience....anyone else remember this?

Also, I was baffled when WRX picked up Imus back in the 90's and it took so long to get Stern on in Providence. It was great when it finally got here, even though it was annoying to leave the radio set on 106.3 in the AM and come out of work at night, turn on the car and get hit with the hip hop nonsense they ran during the rest of the day.

Hi tolduso,

The show seems to be looking for lots from 1986. That is the one year that I don't have any K-Rock shows. However I definitely remember the short lived syndicated Saturday morning version that aired from September of 1986 to Februrary of 1987. The show had trouble getting National sponsors so it was canceled.

But I do have 14 of these shows in my collection. I missed the first 10 because nobody told me that it existed. I accidently found out about it during a Bus trip to Radio City Music Hall. I had my walkman with me and tuned into HJY as the bus crossed the Rhode Island state line into Connecticut. I couldn't believe my ears. I heard Howard and Grandpa Al Lewis doing a Gay Munsters skit! I was like.... HOLY SH*T. What the F is this? It was great and it was Stern on a PROVIDENCE station!!!! That was something that I had only dreamed about. WBCN Boston also aired the syndicated weekend show Sunday Nights at Midnight. So I was lucky enough to be able to tape that first broadcast that I heard on the bus the previous morning.

Speaking of taping I'm currently going through a nightmare process of digitizing and uploading every tape I own. Ive done about 200 so far. This is just phase one of this stupid project. I've literally got a thousand Stern tapes sitting in a huge closet which need to be transferred now. Not difficult. But very time consuming! I have two computers in this room. One dedicated to just tape processing right now and the other system for me to surf and actually get some work done on.
