Does anyone miss the old Lottery Live?

I'm sure many of you here in the Boston area fondly remember the "Lottery Live" segment with Dawn Hayes that aired on various TV stations in Boston for approximately 20 years. For quite a long time, it was on WNEV/WHDH right after Jeopardy. Then in 1994, it moved to WCVB, and it stayed there for 4 years, and then it moved to WBZ in 1998, and WSBK in 2001. Then in 2004, it moved back to WCVB, but then they got rid of Dawn Hayes, and they don't even show the machines anymore. They now simply have a voiceover, and they show the numbers on the screen. For the Daily Numbers Game they do still show the wheels spinning, but that's it. I mean, for how they do it now, then what's the whole purpose of having Lottery Live at all? I really miss the old way a lot. Does anyone else feel this way?

Didn't the Massachusetts Lottery also have a game show of some sorts once? I live in Connecticut and we had something called "The Rainbow Jackpot" in the 1980s which aired on Connecticut Public Television (a.k.a. CPTV). We were also part of the multi-state "PowerBALL: The Game Show" for a few years. It was cancelled in 2005.

By the way, are those drawings ever carried in Springfield or the New Bedford half of the Providence, RI market? Connecticut's in-state drawings are held at the studios of WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford. Drawings are conducted by several different employees of the Connecticut Lottery Corporation. WTIC-TV also carries the live PowerBALL drawings (which usually come from West Des Moines, IA) on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 PM.

I actually don't know if they were ever broadcast in Springfield, but all of Bristol Co. (in the Providence/New Bedford market) receive Boston stations on cable, so they don't really need to broadcast them on the Providence stations. WCVB actually DID have a game show called "Bonus Bonanza" from 1994 until about 1997 or so. The host was Brian Tracey, and his co-host was Dawn Hayes.

However, the version of Lottery Live I miss the most was when it was on WNEV/WHDH. In fact, during the time they had Lottery Live, they had this special logo with 7 balls formed in the shape of a number 7. It used to always be seen at the beginning of Lottery Live. The way it worked was: First, the balls would be in the shape of a 7, and then they would all bounce out of their positions, and the camera would zoom up to the one ball that read "Lottery Live" in big blue letters. And then the "O" in the word Lottery was also a ball, and it bounced out of the word, and that ball would reveal the name of the game which was being shown at the time. And also, I LOVED the music that went with it. The music used was this variation of the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour theme, and it was written by Edd Kalehoff. In fact, it can be heard right here:

When I found this cue, it really brought back a lot of memories, and it made me CRY!!!

Yeah I remember Lottery Live. I think I'm the one who sent Casey Buck that music you posted. Tom Bergeron hosted Lottery Live on WBZ before WNEV carried it. Those were the days.

This is actually very interesting. Because, see, what happened was, when Casey Buck originally got that cue, he had absolutely no idea where it was used. See, that page of his is meant for music cues from The Price is Right. I think he got the impression that it was used on The Price is Right somewhere, but he wasn't sure where it was used. I would like to know exactly where you got that music, and when exactly WNEV started carrying Lottery Live. Are you trying to say that this music was used on the old WBZ/Tom Bergeron version as well?

Lottery Live on WBZ with Tom Bergeron used different music. I've got a clip of it somewhere. I actually liked it better than The Lottery Live music from WNEV. Lottery Live switched to WNEV in 1987 I believe. Casey buck posted the Lottery Live music because it's very silimilar to The Match Game Hollywood Squares theme that "The Price Is Right" now uses as a car cue.

Most of the Price Is Right music came from me as well. I collect Production music and friends in the business have sent me lots of music over the years for many different programs.

Didn't Frank Avruch serve as Lottery host on WCVB for a while?

Is he still doing VO work in any capacity for Ch. 5?

Frank actually served as the Sunday and substitute host for about a year on WCVB. For awhile he alternated with someone named Rita Frasier. Then Frank retired, and was replaced by a blonde woman named Kristen Daily. A few years later, Nancy O'Neil took over, and also stayed with them until its literal demise.

Speaking of substitutes, I remember in the early 90s on WNEV/WHDH, there was this woman named Linda Ward. Then for a little bit less than a year, during the final run of the show on WHDH, a young woman named Jill Stark took that position.

I was also told that it didn't go directly from Tom Bergeron to Dawn Hayes. I heard from someone that there was some woman in between. You wouldn't happen to remember who that was?

Don't forget the first lottery host, "Mr. Lottery Himself" Tom Russell. He was really good for all of who think "the good old days" were about 10 years ago.

Is Tom Russell the older gentleman who used to host a weekly Game Show which was broadcast on WLVI 56? If so I remember watching that as a kid. I don't remember a whole lot about it other than the spinning wheels as well as a row of contestants who would each have a digital display of a number in front of them. These numbers sequenced randomly. I think the numbers ranged 1 thru 6. Then each contestant had to hit their red button to stop the display. I think whoever landed on the highest number got to play for the Bonus Prize. It was a really cool for a local Game Show.

I believe her name was Andi Waugh. Channel 7 made such a big deal about getting the lottery deal, that they held open auditions all over the state to find the next host(ess). Poor 7 was the bottom feeder station back then, and instead of hiring a professional to host the lottery drawings, they milked the publicity by having auditions and hiring someone with obviously no on-air experience whatsoever. Andi was the "winner". Nice lady, a pretty redhead, but very painful to watch. I don't think she even lasted a year, and then they went with the very polished and professional Dawn Hayes. I think Channel 7's announcer Chris Clausen filled in on some of the drawings.

I did like opening sequence with the 7 balls in the logo flying out of position. :)

I found my old clip of WBZ's Lottery Live with Tom Bergeron today. This is from 1986. An odd mishap took place because Tom's Microphone failed and the Backup Mic also failed. So what you hear is mostly the Lottery Live theme music with what sounds like Tom Bergeron in another room. He's aware that his Mic isn't working though and even though it's difficult to hear him he makes jokes about it throughout the segment. Click the link below and enjoy.

Wow! That was a funny blooper! I'm surprised they WBZ still had Lottery Live in 1986. You wouldn't happen to know when WNEV picked it up, and when Dawn Hayes started?

Also, I heard that for awhile, there was a woman named Linda Frantangela (or something like that). Does anyone remember when she hosted?

I checked the Mass Lottery Website and this drawing didn't take place in 1986, because Tom Bergeron said Friday July 26th, so this must have been Recorded on Friday July 26th, 1985 from WBZ Channel 4 Boston

You are correct. I was a year off. The clip is from Friday July 26th, 1985. However I think I am still correct regarding when WNEV started airing "Lottery Live". It was 1987.

Actually, I think 1987 DOES sound more correct. I think the reason why they changed to the 7 logo with the balls was BECAUSE of Lottery Live. It seems that at the time, they really did make a big deal out of airing the lottery. In fact, this might have been the exact same time that they moved Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! to 7:00 and 7:30. I was told there was even a promo with Alex Trebek saying something like "Watch Jeopardy! The show that brings you Lottery Live, tonight!" And then in 1993, just before they dropped Lottery Live, they changed their logo to the circle-7 logo that they still use today, and the old "Lottery Live" intro was edited, where they chopped off the part with the old logo, but they still had the balls flying around the screen. They also stripped the decoration towers in the studio with the old logo, making it more plain looking.

These days I'm not familiar with where the Mass Lottery drawings take place. What time and channel? Also.... do they have a name for it anymore (or) did they just drop the name of the drawings when "Lottery Live" went away?

In-state drawings are on WCVB-TV (ABC) channel 5 Boston between 7:55 and 8 PM Monday to Saturday and between 6:55 and 7 PM on Sundays. As for the name, I think they say "Lottery Live on Five."
