Does Anyone Remember KPLA NEWS/TALK 770 (1991-93)?

KFBK-1530 has had many NEWS/TALK competitors over the years from KGNR-1320 to KSTE-650 to KTKZ-1380, but does anyone remember when KPLA-770 changed its format from RELIGIOUS to NEWS/TALK in 1991 to compete against KFBK? What is funny though is that KPLA was licensed to RIVERBANK and its transmitter was in OAKDALE but their STUDIOS were in SACRAMENTO! Yes They were 50000 Watts at Day but at night, They were a mere 1000 Watts. While most of their programming was syndicated (STAN MAJORS, CHUCK HARDER) they did have some Local Shows. KPLA had a MORNING NEWS that was Anchored by (The Late) RICK STEWART (KRAK) and MIKE REYNOLDS (KSFM) as well as a Talk Show hosted by GEOFF METCALF. They also had Weekend Sports of mostly Class A Baseball (STOCKTON PORTS) and College Football (UOP). A year later, They fired all local hosts and by 1993, KPLA was sold to CRAWFORD BROADCASTING and the format was changed BACK to RELIGIOUS.

I remember that station, M.M.Sam, and some of their billboards, fairly well...Stewart, especially,
was solid. Their legal I.D.s seemed to sound like this:

"K P L A (LOUDLY spoken), Riverbank (mumbled softly) - SACRAMENTO (spoken LOUDLY again)"...

It was as if they were too embarrassed to admit their Riverbank locale, and/or intended to
emphasize Sacramento instead...

And it's strange that K P L A promoted the Stockton Ports, aka "Good Old Days Baseball,"
on a "Sacto" station...I didn't think there would be interest in the Ports in Sacto...

News/Talk 770, The Source!

So I'm guessing they called themselves "77 West" after this period? I'm not too sure on when they did this.

They were "77 WEST" from 1987-91 when they were Religious. In 1991, When they switched from Religious to News/Talk, They became NEWS/TALK 770 THE SOURCE then when they were sold to its current owner, CRAWFORD BROADCASTING, They switched back to Religious.

I also want to add that the only time 770-Riverbank broadcast 24 Hours was when They were NEWS/TALK. From 1987-91 They were on the air from 5:AM-Midnight, Then in from 1991-93, They were 24/7, Then when Crawford acquired the station, it went to 6:AM-Midnight, then a few years later, they scaled back to 6:AM-10:30PM.

Well, in the 80's, whew, I was the afternoon DJ, Chris Bailey, when we were known as KPLA - Riverbank/San Francisco. 77WEST. Here is one of my airchecks when I was there. We actually had the studios right there with the transmitters, AM Stereo mind you. What times those were. I also worked at KHOP FM Modesto and KFIV Modesto, to name a few.

KPLA-AM 77WEST Chris Bailey

Its interesting how 77WEST is modeled after 77WABC New York the way they did their top 40 format before they switched to talk radio.
