Does Anyone Remember the "Defector" From Deland???

The guy's name was Ted Branch and defected to the USSR in the late 70''s or maybe late 80's. I remember watching the TV news where I was at the time and there was a story about it! The Russians described him as a "media expert". I worked with this guy in another market and was NOT impressed. Drove an old car, was overweight and unkempt. Supposedly he was the manager of a station in Deland and was originally from Erie, Pa.

You may be talking about Elvis Gorbechev on WOCL-FM 105.9, real name Jack Dyer. His character marked the station's debut on Feb. 14, 1988, when he (as Elvis) locked himself into the station's control room to play 36 hours of Presley hits. It was a stunt that instantly defined the station's identity and launched a second career for Dyer, who was a customer service representative for Delta Air Lines.

Thank's Bob. I see I had my stations wrong! Never knew there ever was a station in Mt Dora! I did some research based on the article you quoted. He was born on 1943 and would be 69 today. His wife is/was named Cheryle...an unusual spelling. There is a 69 year old Ted Branch with a wife also in her mid 60's living in Pittsburgh. Would be an interesting article if someone was to interview him now!!!
