Does anyone remember this? (TV-Movie?)

Most of you are probably familiar with the theatrical film "Capricorn One" in which NASA blackmails the astronauts of the first manned Mars mission into "faking" the flight when it becomes apparent that they will be unable to achieve it legitimately.

But there is a more obscure film, perhaps a TV-Movie, that involves a failed manned Mars mission.

The basic plot as I recall (very dim memories) is that the first astronaut to venture to Mars (solo) lands successfully, but shortly after he emerges from his landing craft, he collapses and dies. (I think the premise was some unforeseen component in the Martian atmosphere that compromised the integrity of his pressure suit.) The one clip I remember vividly is technicians watching a video transmission as he suddenly shows signs of distress, then collapses.

They then try to cover up the tragedy (which assumedly must NOT have been seen live by the TV viewing public) by recruiting a near-double for the dead astronaut who, after some plastic surgery, takes his place and triumphantly "returns" to Earth. But the deceased astronaut's wife quickly realizes that something is wrong. Her revelation may have taken place when the doppelganger attempts to make love to her (I seem to recall a bedroom scene with the two of them).

This vague memory has stuck in my head (and craw) for a long time (the film may date from as far back as the 70's). And I'm pretty sure it was a made-for-TV production. Does anyone recall this?

That does sound vaguely familiar. Was James Franciscus in it?

Sounds like you may be thinking of "Marooned" (1969), another well-traveled space drama. Nope -- not related at all.

Might you be thinking of a 1972 made-for-TV movie with Monte Markham called The Astronaut?

...that same year, there was a PBS movie drawn from various Kurt Vonnegut stories and novels titled Between Time and Timbuktu, in which an astronaut passes through a zone in space and is duplicated, each duplicate discovering himself in bizarre circumstances on various planets. Dunno if Mars was the original destination in the fictional mission...

BINGO!! That's it! Looked it up on imdb and everything checks. And Susan Clark as his wife -- yes, it's all coming back to me now. Only odd thing is I don't remember it being that early in the 70's (I would have been 14 at the time), but some made-for-TV flicks went into syndicated movie packages, so it's entirely possible I saw it some years after. THANK YOU!! ;D

Looking at IMDB, Markham did "The Astronaut" around the same time ( or maybe shortly before ) when he did another TV-movie flick called "Visions". Telly Savalas was in that movie too. Today "Visions" is pretty much regarded as a 1972 Denver, Colorado time capsule. Not only does one get to see in the movie the late, popular Denver TV news anchor Bob Palmer doing the news on then KLZ-TV 7 ( now KMGH ) but there is a scene where Markham is singing along in his car to "KIMN 95" ( Denver's big top 40 AM station at the time ). I believe the original Elitch Gardens amusement park, the downtown Denver department store ( and now defunct ) Joslins, 16th Street ( before it became a downtown walking mall ) and King Soopers Supermarkets ( before Kroger took over ) all made an appearance in that movie. However outside of all that Denver 1972 "history", "Visions" wasn't much.
