Does Anyone Remember WCDQ???

I was just thinking as we all do about how it "used to be " when radio was entertaining , creative , compelling much like Prairie Home Companion (face it few radio people have had the same gig for 30 years ) Does anyone remember WCDQ 92.1 . It was like the intersection of lake Wobegon and Haight Ashbury with great music , great people too. It's unfortunate that someone , somewhere somehow couldn't make radio like this again , IT'S WAY PAST TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sure do. Mount Rialto Radio. 92 WCDQ Sanford. I may even have some airchecks scattered about somewhere in the house. Even though it was a struggle getting it here in Portland, I managed to rig an antenna.

I loved WCDQ, and I'm in the Boston area. I could only hear it when I occasionally went up that way, or once in a while when "troppo" would bring it down here.

Unfortunately, "free-form" radio like that isn't likely to succeed with today's mainstream commercial radio listeners any more. Nowadays, programming like that is mainly only viable on non-commercial stations, satellite radio channels, and internet streams.

I honestly think listeners enjoyed WCDQ 92.1 because it was unpredicatable!
Everytime you turned it on, you either learned something new about music or the artist performing it!

Maybe the difference between WCDQ and other radio stations was that its owners weren't afraid to "take a chance and try something different?"

Granted...92.1 wasn't promoted as heavily as some of the stations were and listeners had to 'find it?' But it was a heck of a lot better than several of today's radio frequencies that are currently "screaming and yelling about themselves and how terrific their format is!"

Sooner or later, A GM or somebody from corporate will "get wise and realize" that its radio listeners are CONSIDERABLY SMARTER than the 'suits' believe them to be? But until one or two of 'em wake up...we've got satellite, cd's or the 'same old song and dance' that most of the local stations are cranking out!

I'm not sure I'd include satellite radio in this...it's almost as formatted, voicetracked & playlisted as commercial terrestrial radio.

VERY TRUE!

But the margin of clutter you'd normally hear (via too many bad commercials and promos) is considerably LESS!

Remeber it, hell! I worked there! I drove 2 1/2 hours to do one 6 hour weekend shift. I was full-time in Haverhill, MA at then WLYT. Can't remember, for the life of me, the name of the PD though. He was pre Russ Dumont (there's another name from the past). GREAT radio, great music. breed now long gone.

I was there on day one. The switch from 92 WSME (The voice of York County) to 92 CDQ, from high atop Mt. Rialto! The PD(s) were the GM and the Owner (Dave Daigle and Don Crown). I didn't appreciate what we were doing at the time, but looking back I can see now that it was the last of good commercial radio in this area.
