Does Anyone Remember When KFIV-102.3 was AOR as ROCK 102?

The other station I fondly remember was when KFIV-102.3 was AOR. I believe it occured around 1982 or 1983. They were known as "ROCK 102". (No Relation To ROCK 104 or ROCK 95 or ROCK 96.7). I don't know who programmed the station but it had a cool sound to it. Around 1984 or so, They renamed themselves as "HOT ROCK 102". They had a Sunday Night Beatles show called "THE HOT B.L.T.- BEATLES LEGACY TRACKS". KFIV-102.3 changed to CHR/Top 40 in 1986. I am guessing that AOR KDJK-95.1 did them in? Does anyone else have fond memories of either ROCK 102 or HOT ROCK 102?

I was too young during the ROCK 102 days.. I do remember the KFIV 102.3 days however. I recall listening around 1987, and I do remember hearing syndicated programs like "Future Hits with Joel Denver" and "Dr. Demento" on Sunday nights.

I remember them in the early 80's. I believe they switched to Top 40 during the AOR lull before the sign on of KDJK.
While Sacramento had KZAP & KSFM and the Bay Area had KSAN-94.9 & KOME-98.5, The Central Valley had its share of Rockers on the dial. In the 1970's it was KSRT-100.9 (now Regional Mexican KMIX) and KLBS-104.7 (now CHR/Rythmic KHTN), In the 1980's, it was KFIV-102.3 (now AC KJSN), KDJK-95.1 (now CHR/Pop KHOP) and KVFX-96.7 (now Spanish Oldies KMRQ), then in the 1990's there was KHOP-104.1 (still Rocking but as Classic Rock KHKK) and KDJK-95.1 briefly switched to Alternative Rock then to Active Rock before becoming first 80's Hits KHOP and later CHR/Pop KHOP by the start of the 21st Century. Oh yes, let's not forget KMRQ's incarnation as both ROCK 96.7 and NEW ROCK 96.7.

Also if i recall, KSRT-100.9 was more of a tight AOR format while KLBS-104.7 was more free form.

KSRT was the first commercial station I worked at and it was very loosely programmed. We had a lot of input in what our shows sounded like, but had a loose rotation clock of music catagories to choose artists, albums and cuts from. Gus Soto was the Program Dir and his brother Adrian was Sales Manager. Mom and Pop owned the station. KLBS was indeed more free form sounding.

I also remember Rock 102 very well. Their control room was actually in a mobile home trailer that was parked next to the AM station on Orangeburg. They were a pretty mild version of rock.

And in 1981, they sold KSRT to the owner of KWG-1230 who then switched the format to Adult Contemporary and calls to KWGF (like in KWG FM) since they couldn't legally change it to KWG-FM. By 1983, KWGF became KYBB-B101 but still remained AC though most of the programming was via Satellite (Transtar). Around 1989, They switched to Oldies and calls to KSGO (OLDIES 101).

I remember Rock 102 very well. I know that their afternoon jock was "Mark The Shark." Before that, I believe it was Classic Rock K102 with Ryn Stevens doing mornings. They in 1984, they tweaked to "Hot Rock 102" then one year later, they flipped to a CHR format and called itself 102.3 KFIV to compete with which was then Stereo 104. KFIV remained a CHR until I believe 1989 when the flipped to its current AC format known as Sunny 102.3!

Mark the Shark was actually Thom Reinstein who went on to syndicate his own New Age jazz show called Portriats In Sound. He sold the show in '89 or '90 and I hired him as an Account Executive at KO93. Not sue what he's up to these days. Maybe he's at the River. He loved New Age.

Thom Reinstein later worked for COMMUNITY PACIFIC BROADCASTING by the mid-1990's. If I remember right, Thom used to cohost/do the news with Modesto Talk Show Host, RICK MINYARD at KFIV-1360. He also was P.D. at then CLASSIC ROCK station, KVFX-96.7 THE FOX when COMMUNITY PACIFIC owned it around 1995 or 1996. I don't know where he is at, today!

I remember Thom's awesome Mountain Aire concert spots every for Rockin' Chair Productions. They were certainly an inspiration to an aspiring (read: wannabe) production guy back in the day.

After leaving sales at KOSO, Thom was the Advertising Director for Central Valley Automotive and I think he may have even produced a jingle or two for them while there. It's been a few years since I talked to him, but the last time I heard from him, he was somewhere in the Bay Area, getting his voice-over business going again.

I always liked his very distinct sound.

Dude, very impressive memory you have....or great notes you've researched. Either way, it's interesting to walk back through calls and formats that I had forgotten about throughout this thread.
