Does anyone remember when KLIV-1590 San Jose was AOR?

I remember when KLIV-1590 was an AOR radio station. As best as I can recall, KLIV was AOR from 1980-81.The DJ's on the station that I remember includes Al Visso, John McLeod and the legendary Paul "LOBSTER" Welles. It wasn't a bad station, and they had a wide range of AOR music, but I thought it was strange for a Top 40/Disco station to switch to a format that was already covered by 2 established FM AOR stations: KSJO-92.3 and KOME-98.5 . Plus being on the AM dial, that music was tailored made for the FM dial. After a year, they switched to an automated "Music Of Your Life" format. Does anyone else remember the AOR year of KLIV?

I realized they were top 40, but not AOR. That;s interesting. When did they start as a top 40 station and when did they stop.

I don't know when they started as a Top 40 station. I listened to them as early as 1978. They switched to AOR sometime around August of 1980.

> > > KLIV was an AOR station on the AM band in 1980? Truly bizarre. In Los Angeles in the early 70s, K-Day AM 1580 had a good 3 to 5 year run as an AOR station in competition with at least 3 FMs. But that was about a decade earlier than KLIV, when most cars on the road still had AM only radios, so there was still a large audience of people like myself who couldn't afford FM converters yet. Regarding KLIV's Top 40 era, there was thread a couple of months ago here about that. They were a very professional sounding top 40 station in the early to mid 70s, but I'm not sure what year the format started, and can't remember when they pulled the plug.

KLIV originally went on the air as a daytime-only station in September 1946 as KSJO. (Co-owned KSJO-FM, which kept those call letters and later became a popular rock station, went on the air in December 1946.) KSJO (AM) added night-time service in 1947, and became KLIV in June 1960.

kliv_rock-16_c1980_x225.gif
Bob Kieve, who still owns KLIV, bought the station in 1967; it had played Top 40 music for several years before that. KLIV began adding disco heavily into its music mix early in 1979, then changed to "hard rock" in the Summer of 1980, using "The AM Rock Counter-Revolution" as its slogan. The "Rock 16" ID came about shortly thereafter.

In early 1984, KLIV switched to "Music Of Your Life," and switched to all-news in early 1991.

I'm working on a KLIV page on the museum website right now, including several terrific airchecks from the 1960s and 1970s. Check http://www.bayarearadio.org/pages/stations.shtml#KLIV for updates.

I grew up listening to KLIV in San Jose, between KLIV, The Big 610 KFRC and KYA, I was a pretty happy kid. I remember the day I stuck my lime green and turquoise paisley (why they were still using this design in the 70s I do not know) KLIV sticker around 77 or so on my bedroom window. Whoa, I just remembered the request # 575-1600, the jock would pick up after a couple rings, it was pretty magical at the time.

Actually the AOR era of KLIV lasted just under a year. They switched to AOR sometime in August of 1980 and became Music of your Life in May of 1981 not 1984.Some of the Rock Jocks like Lobster continued at the Music of your Life station until he left in 1982 to go to KQAK-98.9 The Quake.

Who's your source, Floyd? Do you have all this in writing? I'm working off of contemporary notes from the time. If you've got verifiable dates and names, let me know.

Thanks!

Album Rock on AM was far from an unknown concept from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. I remember KLIV's "Album Rock on AM" format of 1980-1981. I believe they ran Burkhart-Abrams "Superstars." The format was very similar to KZAP in Sacramento. I always enjoyed AOR with a "Tinny" AM sound.

Here's a listing of some West Coast AM Album Rock stations, compiled from personal memory....Please add to the list or correct any dates !!!:

Sacramento:
KNDE (1470) January 1971-Spring 1973 (Rock Kandie)
KXOA (1470) September 1978 - August 1979 (AM 14, The Rockin' Home)
KROY (1240) January 1981 - November 1982 (1240 Rock & FM Simulcast of 96.9)
KIOQ (1030) July 1987-September 1987 (10 Q)

Bay Area:
KLIV (1590) Summer 1980- May 1981
KTIM (1510) 1970s - Spring 1981
KSJX (1500) 1990-1991 (X Rock)

Los Angeles:
KRLA (1110) 1971-1973
KDAY (1580) 1971-1973
KEZY (1190) 1978-1981 (KEZY Kicks Ass)- Cool Black and Silver Bumper Stickers

Bakersfield:
KERN (1410) 1969-1970
KBAD (1350) 1989-1990

Fresno:
KARM (1430) Mid 1970s

Las Vegas, NV:
KRSR (1140) 1987- 1989 "The Krusher"
KMTW (1340) 1990-1992 (Z Rock Affiliate)

Actually DJ, from a few sources, First, I had just gone To San Joaquin Delta College to take some Broadcasting in 1981, when the switch occured, also there was a good size article in Billboard magazine(when they had pretty good Radio coverage)from 1981 (I don't have the exact date but I will find out ASAP and will let you know) and last I emailed Paul "Lobster" Welles himself who left KLIV in 1982,who emailed me back, thay he who had fond memories of working at KLIV when it was MOYL.

Floyd -- great answer! Thanks for doing the digging for me. I always temper my "facts" with the knowledge that -- even though I have it in writing from back then -- I still could have gotten a date or other information wrong.

We should have the museum's Komplete KLIV Kollection up, at least in skeletal form, this weekend. I'll post a link here in this thread as soon as the sneak preview is ready.

Thanks again,

Stretching AM

What year did they stretched the AM BAND to 1690?

It was "stretched" to 1700, actually, and the earliest expanded-band (the correct term) licenses I could find in the FCC database were dated in 1997.<P ID="signature">______________

The FCC's official notice of the "expansion" and the original list of station allocations from March 1997 is at:

> Hi DJ, I found the old email I got from Lobster back in 2000.(Luckily I saved it) I will foward it to you later tonight. I am still looking for the Billboard article. If I can't find it, I'll check at the library. It has to be sometime in the May 1981 issues(don't know which one). On the old Lobster email, there is his email address, You can try to email him for anything more in depth about the Rock and MOYL years of KLIV. If I can get your email, I will forward the Old Lobster email to you.

That's a good memory. I remember getting a letter in the mail promoting Lobster's new home on "Rock 16 KLIV" in May of 1980 along with a business card.

It was at least May, 1980. I still have my dated lobster letter and that bumper sticker that BossRadioDJ posted. Great stuff.

..slightly off the subject, but I loved KLIV when they were the "top of (my) disco-dial"! In later years I was crushed to find out that on 105.7 Jane McMillan WAN'T merely John McLeod recorded at 7.5 ips, and played-back at 15ips!

Ahhhhh love that Bay Area radio!!

Floyd,

My email is djackson{at}bayarearadio.org -- I look forward to hearing from you, and I appreciate the extra effort. I actually have The Lobdude's email address and have corresponded with him (not about this, though), and I also received independent confirmation from George Sampson (current KLIV news director) that you are absolutely correct in your timeline.

George was there also during the changeover from Rock to MOYL and had some very interesting details to add, all of which will be included in the museum's "KLIV Konfidential" (formerly known as the "KLIV Kollection").

Thanks again!
