Does anyone remember?

106.9 as a jazz station in the late 80s, very early 90s? Wasn't it called Smooth 106.9? This was before "You 106.9". I even remember a billboard around the 45 south/Beltway area. What were the calls? I used to know this!!!!
Something like KKJZ or KZJU. I even had some recollection of this when The Point did that brief Jazzy 106-9 joke. I even thought it funny that the KZJZ calls were similar to the previous jazz format.

It was KJZS, which ran a Smooth Jazz/NAC format from December, 1990 to March, 1992.
That was when US Radio had bought 106.9 from Brother Jimmy and flipped it to Jazz after it moved to the 1200ft tower north of 105...(that is now the aux site with the 2000ft Splendora Salem tower being the main site).

I was in Houston over the Christmas break when the flip happened. I remember seeing the call change reported from KJOJ to KJZS and didn't initially check to see what had changed on 106.9. It may sound odd...since it had the religious "Joy of Jesus" format for a while, my initial thought was the KJZS calls stood for "Jesus." Since NAC stations at the time were using "Oasis" and "Wave" as handles rather than "Smooth Jazz <frequency>", it didn't dawn on me until I finally checked out 106.9, the calls were for "jazz."

Thats right! Wow memory must be slipping :p.
I seem to remember listening right before the flip, they were stunting with something that caught my attention. Needless to say I was disappointed when it went jazz. Thanks for refreshing my memory guys!
