Q108's (Clarksville/Ft Campbell) fake flip in May 2002? It was on Memorial Day. The station went jockless for a week, and dish out promos such as, "Q108 is gone." After that, the station would play snip-its of Rock Alternative songs such as Papa Roach's Last Resort, Pearl Jam's Evenflow, and so the listener thought, "hey, Clarksville/Ft Campbell is getting a rock alternative station." There was even a promo that said, "tune in Monday at 8am to witness the switch."

So, Monday morning at 8am, there was a six-and-a-half minute countdown by a woman with a British accent, and when the countdown was over, you heard "Q108 is gone...Gone crazy about the $100,000 giveaway!" Q108 remained an A/C station, after giving teasers that they were flipping to Rock Alternative. That totally sucked.
 
I think I vaguely remember that. A lot of stations pulled that gag around that time, and it was a lame-brained stunt that didn't really do much of anything for anyone who tried it. KMXV in Kansas City did a "Mix is dead" promo that was actually, "Mix is dead....serious about giving you $1,000,000." It was an insurance contest where someone who found a dollar with a specific serial number could take it to the station and trade it in for $1,000,000. No one found the dollar. No one paid much attention to the promo, and the competition hammered them left and right for doing it.

Q-102 in Cincinnati did a similar one, too, with "Q-102 is finished." It turned out to be, "Q-102 is finished...loading the million dollar money machine." That one was a promo for CBS's multi-market contests they did where you listened for a specific sounder (different on each station) and called 1-866-EASY-WIN. It should have been 1-866-CBS-SCAM (well, in my opinion, anyway)!
 
I remember that. I thought it was earlier (like March), but it may have been May.

I remember tuning in early that morning to see what they flipped it to.

I can't say it sucked because 8 years later, I still remember it. :D

I remember it from 8 years ago and I can say it sucked.

I am not 100% on what month it was, but I would bet $20 that it happened in May. But no more than $20.

I spent three miserable years at Ft Campbell serving our great country in the US Army Infantry, and in those three years I strained to hear 102-9 The Buzz out of Nashville. At the end of my service, I started to hear these promos that Q108 was going to flip to Alternative and I thought, "hey, at least for the last month I will be able to jam out to an alternative station." On Monday morning, well, I never had a dog, but that is the best way to describe how I felt when I learned Q108 was not going to flip...like someone ran over my dog.
 
I would say that's a tad melodramatic.

Even in '02, there were alternative ways (pun intended) to hear alternative music.

It was an effect promotion from a marketing stand point. I still listen to Q-108 on my way to Nashville to this day.

You may not like their format, but it got people talking.

Q108 isn't a bad station, it was on my presets, but I was hoping for an alternative station in Ft Campbell, so I'm sure you can see my plight.

Speaking of presets, here's what was on mine back in 2002 when I lived in Ft. Campbell, KY/Clarksville, TN:

97.1 (It was Hot A/C back then)
102.5 (The Party)
102.9 (The Buzz [I could barely pull it in])
107.1 (Woo-hoo [great call letters!])
107.5 (The River)
107.9 (Q108)
 
I enjoyed the Buzz...still do. Beth "Damn" Donahue was entertaining.

I would listen to The Buzz online while doing production for the station I worked at. :D

I listen to Lightening 100 a lot online. Very broad playlist.

I'm assuming 97.5 wasn't around yet with their rock format?
 
Clarksville-Ft.Campbell-Hopkinsville is a very good smaller ARB market. A lot of that is it's Nashville TV MSA/ADI/TSA... Q is a great sounding Hot-AC (I put it up there with WIKY north of there in Evansville)....97.5 is hard core army boy bangin' and can fill that niche... Then Beaver 100.3 and WKDZ 106.3 have loyal locals considering the massive three headed Country juggernaut from Nashville... ESPN and FOX on the AM side doing sports (540 has good local sports shows and a great signal).... Then a hybrid Classic-Hit Rock FM that moved in from Springfield.. 94.3 is right at the gates of Fort Campbell....AM simulcast with a nice sound.. "The Eagle" even has some good local personalities that don't bog it down, but keep it flowing! Up in Hop-Town.. AM talker, AM Oldies, both with FM translators and 1480/1110, their FM translators and their sister country at 106.5 know how to market small market businesses. Beth Mann and her gang know how to make it work...
