Does anyone remember...

Yep!!! That was good DFW radio back in the day. I loved Power 95 and Y95. YES, KEGL 97.1 was Top 40 too. That was back when Dallas/Ft. Worth radio did not suck like it does TODAY!!!

Good thing this was scoped. Maybe part of the format's demise was U.S. Top 40 dance in this period was just as awful as hair metal and didn't have grunge to save the day. The Euro dance stuff like Quadrophonia never crossed over.

Yep. Was working at KTLR at that time. Would have it on at my apartment all the time. Also got to meet Wendi Westbrook when it was Y-95. She left for Cali and did some low budget movies. She came back and was on Platinum and then left when Debbie Diaz come over. No clue if she is still here or left.

I liked Y-95 better before the change to Power 95. CHR radio was in such a mess in the early 90's with way too many one hit wonders and lame songs. Too bad it killed off so many great stations.

Y95 became Power 95 ("Feel the Energy" was the positioner) on April 26, 1991. The format only lasted six months - KHYI gave way to KODZ (Oldies 94.9) on October 28th of the same year.

Wendi is still lives in the area, and does a lot of commercial voiceover work from her home studio.

Here is some audio of Y95-Power 95 (and 94.9 FM as KHYI was know just before the change to Oldies. Also includes the format change from Y95 to Power 95.):

Power 95 IIRC was Dance from April 26th to around the beginning of July when it transitioned to Mainstream CHR. Buzz Bennett (who was the PD that put Y95 on the air in 1986) was brought back as a consultant during this period. Sadly, none of the adjustments worked as KHYI dropped to around a 2.9 share.

Someone had told me years ago that the Power 95 "era" was just an elaborate format stunt to throw off everybody for several months so that they could change over to Oldies. Scott Ginsberg (KHYI's GM at the time) was the one that was behind it. Was that true or not?
