Does Boston Need Another Triple AAA Station?

Especially since 92.5 the River only goes north and west of Boston, and you can barely get WUMB outside of 128. Makes one really miss the good old days of WBOS, eh? That said, I do think that this city needs another AAA format. This city is the ultimate demographic for it.

What about WERS?

I'd like to see one of the numerous college stations (WERS would be a perfect candidate) try full-time, non-comm AAA like WFUV/New York or WXPN/Philadelphia. It could definitely find a sizable niche, and the market is not afraid to listen to stations below 92 Megahertz. I'd bet once it's established it could sell a whole lot of commer....um, I mean underwriting announcements. Since Emerson College is a communications school, it would be the perfect way to teach students how radio works in the "real world." However, it would mean students would essentially be off the air....

I don't want to change WERS one bit. When I'm in Boston, my first two presets are WUMB and WERS; always something musically different and interesting playing on one of them, IMO. Between them, don't they play just about every AAA mainstay act, anyway? Maybe adding some Americana to the 'ERS playlist would help when you're out of range of 'UMB, but other than that I think those two stations and River make Boston one of the better cities for AAA and AAA-ish music. I listen to 'FUV occasionally online and I actually prefer 'ERS -- a lot less gab on the Boston station.

Just for the record, I forgot to explain. Triple-A that's NOT college radio. I was thinking more along the lines of a WMVY or a WNCS (104.7 the point in VT).

Making WERS a full-time AAA station wouldn't affect the students. Look at WBRU in Providence, which has an all-student airstaff and maintains a tight alternative format.

The trouble with WERS is that the reggae and hip hop shows bring in decent numbers, and some of those weekend shows, as terrible as they are (who needs 3 hours of a cappella music every week?), they bring in donations when pledge drives roll around.

What's the difference whether or not the AAA station is commercial or non-commercial?

WXPN and WFUV are just as musically accessable as WMVY or WNCS, if not more so. The only difference between them is they are non-commercial, and broadcast on signals owned by universities. They are run by paid employees, and most, if not all the on-air personalities are also on the payroll. They have playlists (although the jocks do have some freedom) and do promotions and listener events, just like commercial outlets. They aren't "college" stations using the classic definition of the term. They essentially work like WBUR....professionally run non-commercial radio stations, but instead of running talk programming they play AAA music. Since moving to Philly I find myself listening to WXPN much more often then I tuned into the River when I lived up there.

WERS is basically full time AAA. They've pushed the specialty shows to nights/weekends and from like 3AM every "morning" until 7PM on weekdays plus some chunks of weekends they are in their normal music mix which is AAA.

While they are still relatively new to dedicating that much time to AAA, what they do is way easier to listen to than anything WBOS ever did.

I like to think that WERS is more or less still a mix of AAA and Alternative. Especially with the a capella on sundays.

reelyreal, there really isn't a difference. I'm just picky.

The River in recent years has become too mellow. They call themselves independent and diverse, yet they have added too many safe AC cuts, and don't push the envelope enough. Their signal isn't too bad, although south of rt. 140 and 495, the signal begins to disappear, it's a lot of the playlist.

Massachusetts needs a station like WPRO in Rhode Island,

Fortunately residing in southeastern Mass, we can keep the station on all day, good hosts, good topics, great guests, alot of political involvement.

With WXRV, WERS and WUMB and shows on other college stations, AAA is pretty well covered in Boston. Have WMVY 92.7 for Cape and Southeast Mass.

Simple answer YES ==== KBCO in Boulder , Colorodo is a perfect example - The best diversity ..... Also God Bless and raise FREEFORm BCN

Is a Triple AAA station a station with nine A's? ..............................Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
