Does cbs radio know what its doing these days?

Lets see they flip kzon to talk and then to a rhythmic which is not doing all that well and in nyc they blow up k rock into all talk and then back to a poorly programmed k rock with a bunch of burned out dinsoar rock and that sophie in sandiego it seemed to start off good so my question is does the suits at cbs radio know what they are doing???

I am suprised how well kroq does in los angeles. Guess they do not micro manage that station.

I think the 2008 year alone has clearly shown the answer to your question, and simply put: No, they don't. The suits at CBS Radio, as much as they'd like to make the correct decisions, or execute their goals in the correct manner, have been making some major mistakes that is poorly affecting radio stations all over.

And it's making it hell for some Program Directors, I'm sure...

No, really. Do you see this? We can see, in some instances, the suits affect a station in a negative way, the PD's try to fix it, but end up only making it worse. But that's only in one... or two cases I can think of...

My best bet, for the circumstances you've mentioned above, is that they (the suits) just don't fully understand that each and every market is different. I don't know how they do it, but maybe a little more research is what is needed. We certainly didn't need another hip hop station...

However, I think their new TargetSpot internet radio advertising is brilliant! ;D

Clearly, CBS Radio has taken many steps back in the past 4 years. They were riding the coat-tails of the cash cow known as Howard Stern for many years; in doing so they were able to make bad decisions which really didn't affect their bottom line very much. Once Stern was gone, CBS panicked completely. They attempted to develop an entire format of stations where everyone was trying to sound like Stern, so as to capitalize on those who didn't obtain a Sirius satellite radio--but for the most part that experiment totally flopped. Ad revenues plummeted--nice job Joel Hollender--and then CBS was even more lost. So they took many of the failed FREE-FM stations and put them back to their original formats, with a few exceptions (Phoenix being one of them).

KZON is a disaster, their 12-17 demos look impressive... but that's the irrelevant demo, because 12 year olds generally don't have any money. It's a station built with a template written in 1991 and is losing to a station with no signal and Kiss-FM (whom they heavily targeted when they first signed on).

On the downside, KZON isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The reason for this is that CBS Radio holds on to terrible concepts for way too long... see FREE-FM. It took them 18 months to realize that it was a horrible, failure of a format. Jamz gets /slightly/ better ratings than FREE-FM, so it could take years for them to realize this is a dead end also.

I think if they flipped back to alt maybe a slightly leaning older 25-54 alt some classic alt thrown in get the morning ritual back steal robin nash away from the edge promote the hell out of it i bet it would bill pretty well and it would put an end to an unneccessary station in phoenix. Now with that said the hip hop format has a place in phoenix but it is not 101.5 no ifs ands or buts!!!

I see also on the cleveland board where there alt station krock maybe going away. CBS WTF are you doing???

'ZON has a listing on the CBS corperate web for a PD.
I may apply just for giggles.

It's rare that anything good happens in any business when you do something "for giggles."

You seem like a smart guy, intelligent and passionate about radio. Apply for real.

Take it seriously. Expect to get the gig. Even if you don't end up with the job, I guarantee that going through the process will teach you something. MANY times when a company's hiring for one position they'll interview someone who isn't right that THAT position, but is perfect for one that they have that might not even be posted.

Go for it. And good luck!

Good advice. That is how I got my current job--applied for something else and they offered me the other job instead. ;D

Ok... so my name is now in the hat... :-X

CBS Careers web leaves alot to be desired when applying for a position.

The application will leave them wondering why did this guy do that? ???

Good Question... At least it was on the level.

"Step Back"? Uhmmm....Despite all of your opinions on programming...they don't report "playlists, jocks, promotions" etc..to Wall Street. IT'S ALL ABOUT REVENUE. Radio station are not open for biz to win "coolest thing of the year contests". REVENUE: YTD: KMLE is #1 in local revenue in 2008. KOOL is #2. JamZ is up 30%.

Any other silly comments?

Jamz will not stay up i guarantee you that that is a given!!!It will be blown up with in two years praise the lord!!! I sure hope power wipes the floor clean with jamz!!!

KZON is not losing to KKFR, if that is what you are implying.
The relevant demo for these stations is 18-34:
KZZP 18-34 for April was 5.8
KZON 18-34 for April was 4.0
KKFR 18-34 for April was 2.2

Finally someone who makes sense... Complain all you want about stations jocks and programming, you have the right to your opinion and you have the right to not listen. But stations generating revenue are not going to be "blown up"

Thats not true the correct statement would be if a station can create more revenue with a different format it will get blown up.

Jusy my thought, but if you are 9th or 12th or something in revenue THEN you might walk away from that number for something 'better'. If you are #1 or #2 ranked and pulling 15 or 16 million does a company company blow that up for the potential of 17. Because you also have the real potential of losing the orginal postion and taking steps backwards. A company would have to be armed with a gobs and gobs of rock solid research to even think about it. Objectively, this economic market is probably maxed out. If (insert name of magical new format here) does a 10 share, they aren't pulling more revenue that the #1/#2 spots now.

CBS messed up when they dumped Free FM. Look back at their ratings, especially their last book. Lykis and Carolla were up trending.....Men 18 -34 and Persons 18_34. Their night show was also up trending.

They ONLY reason KZON flipped.....??? Mark Waters..... Who's Mark Waters??? He's the CBS/Phoenix Market Manager, and just happens to be the former GM of KKFR.... And all the revenue KZON is making??? Is that why they just fired their PD????
