Does Denver Need Four Sports Stations?

As far as Denver Supporting four sports stations thats a great question. Although I do have to correct something KCUV which is as we know is now KDSP has been simulcasting KJAC so it never had it's own Classic Rock format.

New York in the early 2000s had three, WFAN, WEPN and WSNR, all on AM. WSNR (5 kW) went away to brokered programming. Now NY has basically one, WFAN with a 50 kW signal that blankets the east coast. WEPN (1050 ESPN) is a non-factor with its directional 50 kW signal. Much of the NY metro cannot receive WEPN and they are the flagship of the Jets, Knicks and Rangers. WEPN will never compete effectively against 'FAN until they get the class B FM they've been seeking for years. Until that happens, 'FAN really has no competition.

Not to knock Denver, but NY is much larger and basically supports only one sports station. IMHO, NY could probably support two if one were not at such a power disadvantage. I'm not in Denver, but four sports stations seems like overkill. Are all these sports stations on FM? :)

There are four in the greater Seattle area, which is really ludicrous since Seattle is not a great sports town.

Sports is a great "parking" format for guys unsure what else to do. At the right rates you can sell it to direct accounts. Sports is also pretty local as far as interest. I have aways wondered how many people in a market (even a big market) will stay with a conversation about a sport or a conference that does not interest them. Especially in the west, and sports talk has a tendency to be east-centric.

Sonethings odd going on here. According to Dusty Saunder's column on the Denver Post website it is now suggesting (unless I'm misunderstanding something here) that the sports programming may not be on 102.3 after all but on 87.7 FM. However, on Vic Lombardi's twitter he said that he and Gary Miller would be on KDSP and so did Westword. not sure if something changed or what but this is too weird.

I'm familiar with KIRO-AM and KJR-AM. They're both on big AM sticks in Seattle. Who are the other two? Are they suburban rimshots? :)

And now Westword has reported the sports-talk on 87.7 FM rumor:

This is new, a commercial full-signal FM on 87.7. The frequency is available because to TV's digital switch. IMHO, it makes more sense to put ESPN Deportes on 87.7 and The Ticket on 102.3 but I don't get paid to make such decisions! This is either going to be a huge success or a huge bust!

IMHO, I don't see a major operator (CC, CBS, Bonneville etc) putting a station on the non-comm part of the FM band. :)

Yes, there is KTAC out of Tacoma on 850 and KRKO in Everett at 1380. KTAC has one of the tightest 50K patterns I've ever seen and has little presence in King County. KRKO has upgraded but still is on a graveyard frequency and struggles to get many listeners in Seattle.

Suspringly enough looks like yet another sports station on FM has arrived this time on Limon's 93.7 Although I'm not sure if this marks Denver's fifth sports station because they are currently simulcasting AM 1510. Not sure how 93.7's signal is in the Denver area but I can pick it up south of the metro area.

We have four sports stations in Jackson, MS. Except for a AA baseball team and 1-AA college football team, we have to gravy-train off of other cities for sports.

It seems as though there are more sports stations in Denver than there are pro and college teams! Do the operators of all these sports stations really think the market can support so many of them? :)

Denver is generally considered a good sports town, where even casual fans have some knowledge and the knowledgeable ones are very knowledgeable. There are guys out there who want to know all there is to know about sports but not many, and never enough to support a 4th or 5th sports talk station--not even in Denver.

There are always business owners who will want to advertise on sports talk, but there are cheaper formats to do. The interface with some sports syndicators is tricky and these affiliations sometimes come with restrictions; and any kind of live sports calls for a board operator.

The biggest question is whether Kronke will keep the Nuggets and Avs on 1510/93.7 now. They have a cleaner FM signal although it's pretty weak. It still boggles my mind that 2 of the biggest sports teams in town are on a crappy signal. You can hear KOA anywhere for the Broncos and Rockies. You can go places during the evening (when the Nuggets and Avs are usually playing) where you can't even hear the game in the car on 1510.

If ESPN Radio moves to 102.3 like I believe it will (Which seems to be what has already happened as well), then there will be no need for AM 1600 as a sports outlet. That will only leave KCKK on 1510 & KKFN 104.3 as the only other two (Bringing the total to 3).

If 105.5 flips to all news (Which I believe will also happen) like its counterpart down in Colorado Springs did, you can link the two stations together to cover the entire I-25 corridor & call it NewsChannel 105.5. So what if it's run out of Colorado Springs (Most people wouldn't care anyway as long as the station had advertising that covered the entire listening area instead of just from Colorado Springs).

Just my opinion though.....

Cheers :D
