Does K-Love really need a FIFTH Austin signal?

It doesn't matter how many signals you have if they all suck. They applied for a bunch of translators, and will use some of them to fill in reception holes. The organization that runs K-LOVE, EMF, also operates a second format called AIR1, which I expect to eventually make its way into Austin.

It's not like they provide a unique service that would be new to the area.

Actually, you are very wrong. You are grouping together all religious stations. KNLE does there own thing and it is all over the board. Spanish-language programming one minute, Christian-country music the next (I wasn't even aware of such a thing), etcetera. KXPW is very youth focused with Christian rock and hip hop, and there is very little overlap with K-LOVE, not to mention the fact that Power can only be heard for about a 15 miles radius around Round Rock.

There is lot of overlap between K-LOVE and The River, but the latter's days are probably numbered. Unlike Clear Channel, EMF is in Austin for the long haul.
 
KMLR doesnt even reach into Austin, I dont see it being a "Austin station" KYLR has a better shot to downtown. Maybe K-Love wants a good signal going downtown.

I thought I answered your question. All of K-Love's signals suck at covering the Austin market, that's why they need 5 to cover what they cover (and there is still a lot of the market that can't get a city-grade signal). I just looked at the FCC's site and there is very little overlap between this new translator and any of the other four signals. It looks like a little overlap with KLLR 91.9 around the community of Hays just over the county line and little overlap with the 97.1 translator around Sunset Valley. 60dBu is what the FCC maps use, but 70dBu is really where most of the the listening takes place and there is no overlap at all using that value.

I don't really think this is an offensive move, just them trying to plug the holes in their own boat.
