Does KDWN have Network News?

Does KDWN have network news? I don't listen that often, but at 5am I heard Hart Kirch give the national news with Ken Stahl the local news. At 8pm and 9pm tonight (Dr. Ken Landow), I heard commercials after the station I.D.

Has their FOX contract expired?

Why did they stop AP news several months ago?

Could they get USA news or the Information Radio Network (IRN)?
______________

God, I'm surprised somebody else has HEARD of IRN. You'd think with only one other real newstalk station in the market, they'd have their pick over there. But somehow they seem to pick the fourth-string losers.

Just back on the east coast after some time in LV. KDWN 50k blowtorch of a signal has to be one of the strangest stations on planet. First of all as far as announcer quality you could not find better voices than Ken Stahl,Hart Kirch, and Truman Hawkins plus the voice you hear doing show intros etc. I beleive Stahl must be the only 5 day a week morning man who does an overnite show on Sat. It seems all full timers do a 6 day week. The news seems only to be on from 5-8am every half hour, During Reagan or Savage shows or non brokered time I did not hear a newscast. Listening to Truman Hawkins ,you never know, if their is a general conversational talk show going on or if a professional or business owner will buy the half hour or hour with Truman acting as host giving the impression the paid for time person is just a guest. Good technique. Also station must rake in dough from long time buyer Stardust race and sportsbook and numerous sports advisors and handicapers. It seems to me station does not have producers, screeners or board ops. I do not believe station has entered digital age yet not when you hear the rattle of carts being placed in machines. Also credit must be given to a 50kw stand alone independent station in over saturated radio market. Finally the jingle 720 KDAWN has been around forever or at least the 80"s when Lee Peete and Art Bell were on and I stayed in Plaza hotel and got lost and accidently saw their station location and then listened for first time.

Who is Lee Peete?

And Hart does a Saturday morning show...I happened to hear Ken Stahl last weekend at 3am play his Christmas special from his old station in the Midwest that he recorded in the 1960's...

Who is Lee Peete? Do you by any chance mean Lou Pete, now overnights and also recently as a daytime sub host at newsradio 710 KIRO Seattle/Tacoma?
______________

Lee Peete (or Pete?) is the pioneer of sports talk radio in Las Vegas. Starting in 1978, LONG before the 24 hour sports stations existed or any sports talk existed, Lee hosted a sports talk show on KDWN from 10p-Midnight Saturdays sponsored by the old Castaways casino on the strip (I believe that's where the Mirage is now). Lee had guest handicappers including one I remember by the name of "Philadelphia Sammy" predict the outcomes of all the NFL games. This was really cool and different, because there was nothing else like it on the radio back then.

A couple years latter the Stardust became the sponsor and the show became "The Stardust Line". A show that still exists to this very day (although Lee hasn't hosted it in many years). In the early-mid 1980s the show was on nightly. I remember Terry Cashman's "Talkin Baseball" was the opening theme song. Lee had a co-host named Donny Beator. Andy Iskoe made his Las Vegas radio debut on Lee's show years ago. Another frequent guest was the late Mike Lee.

Lee was last on the radio just a few years ago. He had a daily sports show on AM 1340. He retired from radio when the station switched to Spanish Talk.

When I heard him in early December, he spent ten minutes on the air messing around with their phone system that wasn't working right. A couple of nights later it still wasn't working right and Pete Moss also decided to work on it, on the air, with dial tones, busy signals, "this number not in service"... all on the air!

It seems all full

"Part-time Pete" Moss seems like he's on all 7.

They had the one-minute Fox News Updates in early December every hour.
Maybe their contract ran out, or more likely there's some technical problem like the satellite receiver broke.

I assume they dropped AP Network News because they didn't want to pay for it, although it is available by barter through Jones Radio Network. A couple of the ABC networks may also be available in the market. But USA or IRN do fit the station's "fill between infomercials" format.

Listening to Truman

They don't seem to have any paid spots except for those businesses who are also buying time for talk shows.

Re: Who is Lee Peete?

Jay Ford called it. Lee Peete was doing sports-talk
when it was still relatively off-beat. He and Jim
Brown, along with Donny Beator were just terriffic.
Now Sports-Talk is a commodity, back in the early
80's these cats played it like jazz, no gimmicks,
just great stories, sports-book info, & chat.

I think he did a good job for his advertisers including the people that sold pants to seniors downtown.....he was a alot more interesting to listen to than some of the other sports people buying time
