Does no AC on 94.9 + Star going younger + stale B98.5 = opening for new Hot AC?

Question: Does the lack of AC from Clear Channel since the Lite was turned out on 94.9, PLUS Star 94 going younger PLUS a stale B98.5 from Cox leave an opening for a true Hot AC to be launched in Atlanta? (you can add Steve McCoy to the mix to make it interesting, but the scenario doesn't have to been predicated on McCoy).

If so who would try it? Would CBS flip 92.9 to Hot AC? Or Cumulus flip 99.7? Could Clear Channel flip 105.7 or 105.3? Is it true that the trend has been upper demos have already been leaving Star 94 for some time?

And with a new Hot AC, doesn't Star have the most to lose, as they'll alienate their upper demos with their new direction (who will go to the new Hot AC station anyway), and they'll lose trying to compete with Q100 head-on?

I think someone should try to jump in there and fill the need. B98 must be doing backflips right now. They are going to pick up most of the old S&V listeners. I wouldn't be shocked to see their numbers skyrocket in '08, especially in mornings.

Re: Does no AC on 94.9 + Star going younger + stale B98.5 = opening for new Hot

Why would Star be moving younger if there was such a demand for Hot AC? Why would Clear Channel have added another country station? Z93/daveFM they're not going to ever be "on the pulse."

Star is NOT "moving younger". Look at their playlist, sports fans. Same mix as always.

I don't know. They seem to be playing more urban stuff than a year or two ago. That would lend to a younger tilt. Their Jingle Jam was targeted to the younger crowd, wasn't it?

Star IS changing but they just don't want regular listeners to think they're changing. They want to hold on to the base and get a new younger audience. It's probably making a format change very tempting to some competitors wanting the money demo (meaning the audience who HAS the money which isn't always the demo agencies buy. There is a reason the new term BDA applies. It stands for "Big Dumb Agencies.")

This sounds reasonable. Perhaps Star will gradually slide younger, hoping the soccer moms won't notice. Of course, that would open the door for a Hot AC, something that Star certainly doesn't want. Star going younger and into Q100's territory (which they've owned since 2001) might force Cumulus to do something about the carcass known as 99X.

B985 is only "stale" in the eyes and minds of "radio pros" on this board. Their ratings and revenue would indicate their audience is pretty happy with what they are doing.
