Does Pensacola have any elbow room??

I've noticed that a lot of other florida cities have a WFLA except us.. I think if 107.3 moved to 104.1 their coverage would double, 107.3 would make a perfect spot for it.

Pensacola/Ft walton needs a 100KW FM talk station NOW (not hit music NOW)

If any of the PDs are reading this, please take this into consideration - even WCOA-FM would work.

-Rob

Rob, I think PD's are listening but are the demographics?
Obviously not. If 107.3 changed names to "NOW" then, the time for a talk station is just not the right time for it.

WCOA, WEBY, WNRP… isn't that enough talk? Heck you could probably include WRKH HD-2 and WAVH from Mobile in that. 106.5 showed up in the ratings in Pensacola somehow.

I'm sure any/all of them would do better on FM, but the stations are doing good now with what they have so there's no reason to change.

I have to admit, it would be a coup for Cumulus to get WCOA to FM but the only way they could do it would be on Journey or Jack and in both cases their lineup would overlap completely with WNTM in Mobile, and that's owned by CC who owns Premiere who owns all the major syndicated talent on WCOA.

Somehow I think that would not work. Anyway, WCOA may be on AM but they have the best daytime signal in Pensacola imho so why bother?

WEBY is probably all alone. Does Spinnaker even own an FM station in the market? WNRP's best hope would be the HD-2 of TK 101.

Understand and apologize for my errors.

What about those of us who are too far away? I just feel like having a full power FM (not HD, not stereo..just a news talk that everyone can hear from Destin to Mobile)

I can pick up HD-2 on 96.1 once in a while. I live in a crappy zone where it would take a sloper antenna or a large outdoor wire just to get a good signal on the AM bands. 106.5 comes in on occasion.

I'm stuck with WOAI 1200 till I can get a good, strong local signal here in the middle of nowhere.
(The FL AM's are very directional or I'd listen to 540 just get some Mexican station on there now. Even in the morning, there's no signal..)

I think Cumulus should trade 106.1 to the Christians for KLove 95.7 and put WCOA-FM on 95.7. Holley is the perfect location for a Cumulus owned FM news/talker for Pensacola and Fort Walton... with no overlap of Clear Channels news/talk stations WFLF-FM or WNTM-AM. With 106.1 right in the heart of Pensacola it should look like gold to the Christians. If the Christians are greedy, throw in an AM signal to sweeten the pie.

Then put Magic or WDLT on 100.7 or 104.1 to fill in the urban void. Give us Oldies on 1370 and 1260. Scott Shannon's satellite oldies feed will be fine. We aren't going to demand live/local oldies.

But what the hell do I know?

Also, I think locally owned WNRP would wind up on a translator (ADX apparently owns two that aren't currently in use within 30 miles of Pensacola), not Clear Channel's TK101-HD2. Although anything would be better than the static they play on 101.5-HD2 now... Hey CC, can you give us a simulcast of Tallahassee's X101.5 on TK101.5-HD2?? Please?

Any why aren't you showing Papa Don any love? WPNN is Pensacola's 4th local news talk station with an application to go 50kw at 770 from the WRNE/WEBY tower site on Garcon Point... don't know how directional it would be. The old WEBY 5k ND site in Milton reached FWB, the new 15kw directional site on Garcon Point doesn't.

Oh, to answer the original question, "Does Pensacola have any elbow room?"

Definitely NOT.

Perhaps a little room for some translators that will reach the Gulf Breeze Wall Mart to the east... at best. But it's taking so long for the radio conglomerates to get down here and light them up that I'm beginning to worry the FCC might shut down all these translators before we see any.

WBSR 1450 has already announced that they are going to a translator on 101.1 FM. It was supposed to happen the first half of September. Two more translators appear to be headed here, one for WYCT (assume this is for WNRP or a new WYCT-HD2) and one for WRNE.

Oh yes, I forgot all about WPNN even though it was the last talk station I listened to overnights in town. I think it was Phil Hendrie on? Anyway…

WEBY might not reach FWB anymore but it sure booms in here to Foley. I'm right under 1310's stick (figuratively speaking) and 1330 usually pulls through anyway.

I wasn't aware Cat Country even had any HD equipment left. They were an early adopter from what I was told, but I've never seen a trace of HD from them. Still, if they fired that dusty old box back up and put on an HD-2 that would give ADX TWO more signals to relay to translators. Putting WNRP on HD-2 of one of the stations is a no brainer.

You remember back during my big speculation thread a while back how the translator is restricted to the AM's 2 mV/m contour, which would really put small AMs like WBSR in a tight spot re: FX location? Well, if the AM is relayed via an HD-2, then the FX can relay the HD-2 anywhere the main FM signal covers. It's a loophole around the 2 mV/m rule! WNRP has a tiny coverage area on paper; putting them on HD-2 and relaying THAT via translator would allow the translator to be almost anywhere and have as much power as possible.

Yep, right now WEBY and WWL are the only AM stations that you can listen to for the whole drive from Escambia Bay to Mobile bay... and west into Mississippi.

Cat Country hasn't run HD at all since I've had a HD radio, but I "thought" they signed on with HD (on the FM). If they didn't keep the equipment I would expect them to get some. I think they'll try to max out with a total of three FM translators in the Pensacola market, one for WNRP-AM and two for HD subs of 98.7... assuming they can afford it, I really expect them to do everything possible to get some translators on the air. (Think Bluewater in Montgomery) I guess they could lease HD space from CC or Cumulus, but why lease when you can buy (new equipment for your own FM)?

As for formats, I wouldn't be surprised to see News/Talk (WNRP), Classic Country (bringing back Larry Butler and WBUB) and possibly Alt Rock or AAA (lease a HD-2 sub to 92Zew, hint hint, or just copy 92Zew's playlist) on translators in the next year...

Actually, Pensacola does have an Elbow Room. Google still shows it near on Cervantes just west of Pace. I used to knock back a few cold ones and play video games with some of my WOWW co-workers there back in the 80's.

Only time will tell - I feel kinda left out.. right now, 1.200 is booming in.

I'm well aware of the AM options but, being directional and flea power, kinda makes this a null point to discuss.

I'm very shocked we don't have at least a WFLA station It looks like other FL cities do have em but us. (unless I'm wrong) and another news talk station.

Yeah, that Elbow Room is still going strong. Showgirls was bulldozed years ago though.

I'm slipping. It wasn't Showgirls that was dozed, it was the Backseat... used to be next door to the Elbow Room, that was the nudie bar that was bulldozed.
