Does SiriusXM realize that if they upped the bitrate just a slight bit the channels would sound better?

They already raised many of the music channel bitrates a couple years ago while commissioning their new satellites.
Your opinion is outdated.
From what I see their most recent satellite launch in 2020 failed in orbit.

EDIT: Looks like they launched SXM-8 as a replacement.

With that said to me the quality still sounds awful to me with mostly highs being extremely shrill. To me a indication of low bitrates still being used and SRB trying to make up for it. When i get a chance maybe I'll revisit it but last i looked it was still the same crap.

I know this is a old but but Yeah, This is caused by a terrible front end design. Wouldn't surprise me if there is no filtering at all.

XM tried to actually get FCC action which i guess is cheaper then doing a recall because they failed to build proper out of band rejection. T-Mobile accused of interfering with Sirius XM's signal at certain cell towers

Very much the same of the C-Band and radio altimeter feud we saw a few years ago. Stop building your crap with the assumption that radio bands wont be used in the future. Yeah, It may be a cheap cost saving method now until it blows up and you have to deal with later.
I can see why SxM was complaining, but its really an issue created by the FCC. If you look at the part 27 rules for AWS band 4, a base station can run as much as EIRP ≤ 3280 watts/MHz (35 dBW/MHz) (RURAL) or ≤ 1640 watts/MHz (32 dBW/MHz) (CITY). Even at the distances from T-Mobile's panel on the tower to the little SxM amplified patch antenna on the roof of your car, that's not a lot of room, and i can certainly see how that potential power level received by the LNA on the roof could get saturated. I also am quite sure they did not invest in a whole lot of filtering and have a lot of gain on those patch antennas to get the small signal from the birds and from a lesser extent, the repeaters. I also don't know what the actual TXPO or EIRP T-Mobile is using on the AWS-4 Downlinks, but it can be substantial.

I experience the same issue in my wife's car on her XM tuner at a couple of intersections. Meanwhile my legacy Sirius tuner does not get blanked out at the same locations.

For reference: AWS-4 Downlink: 2180-2200 MHz
SDARS: 2332.5 - 2345 MHz

This also reminds me of when the FCC allowed NexTel to construct their iDen towers interleaved with 800 MHz Part 90 business and public safety. In this case the channels were adjacent, but still the issue was caused by the FCC not separating them from the get go. That said, Sprint/T-Mo did quite alright in the end even with having to pay for all of the Part 90 rebanding!
 
I've been lazy and haven't read all of the comments in this thread so someone has probably already touched on this but.... I DO notice a difference in sound quality between the receiver in our 2012 Corolla and our new 2024 Corolla. So, I'm guessing the newer receivers are probably better at decoding the signal (and all the processing that goes with it) than the older ones. Just my $.02
 
I dont know exactly what bitrate most of the SiriusXM Satellites run the channels at but from what i've read online, most of the music channels are ran at 48kbps, the talk channels are at 16kbps and Symphony Hall gets more than all the other channels, but my question is do they realize that they could slightly up the bitrate on the music channels to 64 or even 96kbps? It would sound worlds better, but I guess they rather cram as many channels in as they can instead of making the existing ones sound better. I mean I know I could just use the app for better quality, but in Rural areas where cell phone service is spotty its better to listen from the satellites.

Some are in mono on legacy XM receivers and encoded using parametric stereo at mostly 24kbps and maybe some at 16kbps (like whatever enLighten is called now) which sounds better than some of their 32 kbps stereo channels. 50s Gold, Siriusly Sinatra, Escape, Elvis Radio, and 40s Junction (for the rare stereo track), and Holiday Traditions are some of the channels broadcast this way.

Some of the “2.0” channels that are 300+ are part of the “newer” hierarchical modulation encoding, sent as one big data bundle with constantly shifting bitrates (but not shifting too far out of a range) based on real-time audio data.

Then there’s the five channels occupying the former Sirius Backseat TV bandwidth, which I’ll have to ask my friend who was in their engineering dept about next time I see him - I think this is a yet newer generation encoding. These are channels 3001 Hits 1 Top Pop Hits, 3004 60s/70s Hits, 3006 70s/80s/90s Hits, 3010 80s on 8 Top 100 Hits, and 3020 Classic Rock Hits, which are not listed on any lineup PDF or mentioned anywhere on the website. Very few vehicles get them. I do not have 360L but get them.

I'd be curious to know what the bitrate is for channels on the Sirius system. I am pretty sure it is higher to compensate for the less efficient codec. Having less channels, they should have more bits to utilize. I know the Howard 100 channel sounds very good on the Sirius system. Conan's channel also sounded very good the last time I listened to it. They must be wasting a lot of bits on these channels. It would be nice if they trimmed them down a bit and gave the bits to the other talk channels.

It’s harder to give an exact bitrate for the Sirius side of things; the Sirius system uses Statistical Multiplexing (StatMux) PAC Lucent codec. Each channel is a VBR range with bandwidth shifting on the fly. Essentially the midpoint of the range is the same as the XM side bitrates.
 
It’s inefficient because Sirius and XM were once competitors and had two different systems. There are still many radios that only receive Sirius or only receive XM. And the software for those radios can’t be updated. So we’re stuck with this inefficiency for at least another decade.

Exactly. And complicating that process is the fact they kept installing Sirius chips in vehicles until somewhat recently which further delays the plans to sunset that transmission system. Yes, automakers do the installs but SXM didn’t do anything to adjust that process. I know some people on here think the company is well run but I disagree - quite buffoonish actually. They’re just successful because they’re a monopoly. XM should have absorbed Sirius - things would be way different, much better.

A few years ago I read somewhere that the Sirius transmission format would be discontinued in 2027, and the Sirius-only receivers in older cars would no longer work. If that still true? Or will the legacy distribution remain active for the foreseeable future?

Sounds like wishful thinking if that's what SXM was saying. Those old legacy radios are built like tanks and there are still plenty on the road and at home. Unless the company is prepared to offer replacement receivers free (ha) or at a considerable discount, ending legacy distribution would disenfranchise at least hundreds of thousands of subscribers who depend on in-car reception and don't have streaming capabilities. Subscriber count would take a big hit.

They would be able to know how many subscribers have the old radios. Eventually there will be a point when it’s worth it to give the few people left with old radios a new receiver. There are almost certainly people still paying for satellite radio for cars that have been junked, just like some people are still paying for AOL.

You remember correctly - they haven’t mentioned the 2027 date recently though, saying instead “end of decade” or not mentioning it at all. It’s about a year or a bit longer since it’s been mentioned.

They can't really reuse the spectrum very well anyway. Supposedly new radios can use both spectrum ranges? But I imagine this is a very small number of radios.

Most radios that can get channels 300+ can receive both frequency ranges - so if they shut down the legacy Sirius side, they can still run the legacy XM side while and use that freed up spectrum to add channels etc that some receivers can get. I’d imagine that 360L is kinda a gap stop solution in a way until they can send more / higher quality channels over satellites. The cellular data cost for 360L they’re paying isn’t cheap.
 
I hear no audio difference between SiriusXM and FM in my 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan. My only issue with the satellite receiver is that the signal cuts out by some cellphone sites (not sure of the service or the frequencies being used) within about 500 feet of where I'm driving. They're overloading the front end of the receiver.
SXM used the S-Band 2.3-2.4GHz DARS (Digital Audio Radio Service. T-mobile uses 2.5GHz for most of its 5GUC network in the mid-band. That’s probably the issue your having but couldn’t say.
