Here's what I think: maybe help.
I don't think Salem will can Bennett. That's because upper management is more
"true believer" than most other radio chains, and they would see firing or suspending Bennett as a concession to "the enemy." They did suspend Michael Savage on some of their stations after MSNBC gave him a pink slip, but soon brought him back.
Could a potential boycott against advertisers by civil rights groups hurt Salem? I think not. For one thing, their preacher-teacher format is based on block programming and that's pretty impervious to any boycott. Most of the national spot advertising on the talk format appears from my cursory listening to be for smaller companies and business aiming at the conservative base, without much exposure to African-American dollars. Plus, the "Fish" probably has a large exclusive cume that family-friendly sponsors can't afford to ignore for long.
How will this help Salem? Bill Bennett has gotten tons of free pub from cable news and every other talk radio station in town. In most cities, the Salem talker is a poor second, or an even poorer third, with a very low profile. This blowup may cause a few conservative talk fans to cut loose from their current station and scan the dials looking for "Morning in America."
