Does the preset you choose in an 8200 matter if you change the settings?

Since we have so many threads going about the 8200...

One of the things I heard about the 8200 several years ago was that the preset you choose before making any other adjustments has an effect on the sound of the finished product.

In other words - if you started with the ROCK-MEDIUM preset, you would get a different result if you started with a different preset and put in the exact same settings - so each preset has internal settings you can't adjust.

The person I heard this from was the director of engineering for one of the major radio groups (one of the top 5) so that would tend to give the statement some credibility, but I've always wondered if it was really true or not. In his opinion, the ROCK-MEDIUM preset was the best one to start with and supposedly the most similar to the 8100 with an XT2.

Has anyone else ever heard this? Can anyone prove or disprove it?

Hi ElCheapo,
I have also heard this, and the manual suggests this too!

The problem is when i comes down to asking tech questions about any of the Orban digital processors,Orban only point to the manual for reference, they seem very cagey about in depth workings(or explaining what the manual does not say)!

Like the bass clipper info i was after,Marty acuff said the band out mix controls for bands 1 and 2 were after the bass clipper, whilst Bob Orban's view was that he "if i recall correctly"it was before the bass clipper.
So how are we supposed to find out otherwise, who would know better than the above people?

Orban did say that their was some "secret sauce" with the 8200.
In the early days of the 8200 Orban kept the dual agc quiet, and as you know the bass coupling control couples band 1 to band 2 of the multiband agc,as the manual states.

Paul.

The best way to look at the processor brands is like Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. Who Dodge is therefore up to debate. Ford and Chevy would be Orban and Omnia. Orban tech support usually answers question by quoting the manual. Once in a while Bob Orban himself answers tech questions. Orban wants you to read the manual from cover to cover. Mark Manolio over at Omnia is great and always returns phone calls. He is not afraid to give you personal settings or things other people have tried. I like both flavors of processors and prefer the Orban manual documentation over Omnia. Orban actually includes the schematics while Omnia does not.
