does this station really exist over the air

I just came upon WLNG on line...WOW does this station actually broadcast over the air or is it just an internet format. It sure sounds live and local, the music is unbelievable, what a selection of oldies. Does this station make it to the NYC area, if so, why would anyone complain about lack of oldies in NYC. What made me listen was the first song I heard was something I have not heard in over 40 years, a song by a female singer.. Ava Maria is in the lyrics. I can hear sweet voices singing...dont recall the artist, anyone know who it was. I heard it last on WIBG in Philly where I am from....Again, enjoy this station its fabulous I have it locked on my puter now and forever.

I think the original quesiton in this thread should be nominated "Silliest Post of The Month"

The song you were thinking of was THE WEDDING by Julie Roberts (...I can hear the choir singing..Ave Maria). I think it was on London records around 1964. I've done shows on WLNG and they are America's last true oldies station in the tradition of WABC, even though Paul Sidney patterned it after Susquehanna's WGBB Freeport, and to a lesser extent WMCA & WMGM. Always #1 in billing, #1 or 2 in Hamptons/Riverhead ratings for eons.

Tony, thanks for the info, great station and fantastic song, I call an oldies station great, if only one person can relate to a certain song, it does not have to be top 10, 20 or 50, if it touches someone its cool. They sound somewhat like WMID in AC but they have personality to boot. On your info, I just checked Billboard and it was indeed the Wedding by Julie Rogers who was born Julie Rolls in London, peaked at number 10, 11-21-64 on the Mercury Label, why this gem is not played on any other oldies station is beyond me. All this Motown and Soul music that did not crack the top 30 receives plenty of airplay and this song is ignored, go figure....I remember the song on WIBG in Philly, don't remember if WABC or WMCA gave it a spin.

And people like Paul Sydney, Gary Sapianne and Rusty Potts have been with the station 40+ years!

....and you KNOW you have job security when (true story) Rusty Potz has not kept ONE aircheck from the entire 3 1/2 decades he has been there! Are you listening, Joel Hollander!

this station really does exist over the air

Just to wrap up a few loose ends or questions raised in the original post:

WLNG does indeed broadcast at 92.1 FM here on Long Island. However the station can not be readily heard in the New York Metro area. WLNG broadcasts from the East End of Long island, so you have to be way out east in suffolk county to enjoy their programming. I have heard of and witnessed reception of them in Brooklyn as well as the Grand Central Parkway up by LaGuardia Airport, but most normal people wouldn't go there as NY's 92.3 has strong coverage there. It takes an above average car radio to be able to pull that one off.

So just how far away is WLNG from NYC? well by car, it is at least an hour and a half drive, and that's without traffic. It used to say on the WLNG website that Montauk (eastern most tip of Long Island) is further from Manhattan than Philadelphia. Upon checking the atlas, this is indeed true. You can tune in WLNG in Montauk.

WLNG makes radio on the East end special. It is one of a few great Stations out there, with 92.9/96.9 WEHM also a great east end station. Couple them with Riverhead's WRIV 1390 and a station that is on the rebound at 101.7 plus the successful WBAZ 102.5 you have some unique stations out east.

Don't forget that NO station touches WLNG's collection of PAMS jingles.

Yes, they are the only station with jingles *about* their jingles! Truly wonderful -- I'm on the West Coast (SF) but listen on the 'net regularly. A fabulous library of "forgotten" oldies, and jocks who really love radio.
