Does WHDH keep all it's videos?

This is something I've wondered about. I recently called WHDH about a news clip that aired on 11/24/06 where they interviewed JoJo in her hometown of Foxboro. They said they have the description, but the video does not exist anymore. I always thought TV stations kept everything. Do you know if this is true, and/or this video is gone forever?

Most stations keep their videos internally for archive use, and most have "no dub" policies where you aren't allowed to walk in and get a copy. (Obviously court orders superciede that!)

While this answer won't help you in this case, I can tell you that WCVB recently packed up ALL their tape and film and shipped it up to Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport, Maine to be archived. The news story I saw up on here on WABI, Bangor showed them unloading the truck. There was a lot!!! It will take them about three years to go through it all. When it's all done, it will be available to the public. For more information on NHF and their mission, you can visit http://www.oldfilm.org

Guys, you won't believe this. Okay, I'm a member of this JoJo message board, and I found a thread about this report from the time that it happened back in November of 2006. I just revived the thread saying that I contacted the station saying that they don't have it, etc. And all they did was yell at me for bumping up the thread, and then it got locked. I then started a new thread, and it got deleted. Why can't anyone help me with this???

You must have been living in a cave.

Not everyone is up-to-date on their teen singing sensations, myself included. I've never heard of her/him either.

Anywho, to the topic at hand. This does raise an interesting question. Television stations have a treasure trove of video. I know that WGBH has their Open Vault site (http://openvault.wgbh.org/). WCVB, as noted above, has sent their stuff to be archived. Does anyone know what WBZ and WHDH's situations are?

Here's information on what a Spokane television station is doing with theirs (http://www.lostremote.com/2008/07/23/kxly-launches-innovative-video-site/).

Okay, I will admit that I have been going too far just to see this clip. Channel 7 apparently doesn't have it anymore, and I don't know anyone who does.

Is there a clip service in Boston?

Here in Nashville there is at least one service (and I think multiple services) that record the local newscasts, (with the stations' knowledge & permission) you can order dubs from them.

Stations generally keep what they air, in case they need it for some future story. At least in my experience they don't offer access to that material to outside entities without a subpoena. Also in my experience, it's not unusual for stations to not be able to find something when they want it for their own use...

(i.e., it's very possible channel 7 still has that video but can't find it!)
