Does WLER-FM have or have plans for a HD Channel?

I was in Arby's today in the Pullman Plaza of Butler. Looking out the window at the studios of WBUT,
WLER & WISR. I was listening as the audio in the Arby's was a non stop country music format (satellite perhaps). I tend to frequent Arby's all over Pgh and most have WSHH or a few WWSW(DVE during the steeler games). The local station on the radio but not in butler. What a shame! I wonder if WLER has or obtains a HD .. will it be country and if well promoted..would that hurt Froggy and Y108 in those markets that count on country fans for the Pgh book. If WLER and WJPA and some of these other stations went HD country.. what would that do to the plans of Froggy and Y108.

Bless you wonderful folks with vivid imaginations, but...

"HD Radio" is in its infancy.

Even in a large market the size of Pittsburgh, at this point you could probably count the number of listeners with HD radios on two hands, and still have a finger or two left. Bringing them directly to your studio might be an easier way to serve them all, and you'd still have room.

Now, transport that to Butler PA.

I'd probably fall over with a heart attack if there was ONE HD unit in all of the WLER listening area!

I'm not sure why you or anyone thinks it would be something the station needs to do. Maybe it sounds "new" on the radio, but HD Radio is far from listeners' minds even in larger markets, let alone in Butler.

I agree that there is a real dearth of HD recievers out there to take advantage of HD broadcasting.

However, might it not pay for a radio station to supply HD receivers to businesses on the condition that they play that station as background music? Just the other day I was in a newly opened laundromat. They were playing Bob-FM in the background, and had Bob-FM stickers and banners all over the place.

On the one hand, I wasn't thrilled about having to listen to Bob-FM while my laundry dried. On the other hand, it seemed like a great promotion idea for Steel City Media to get people exposed to Bob-FM. While everyone did their laundry, they were listening to WRRK (whether they wanted to or not) and there was a big stack of the free Pittsburgh City Paper for them to read.

Can't imagine why they would bother at this point. Cheapest HD install I have heard of well in excess of $100,000 and that doesn't count the time and heartache of troubleshooting all of the new technical issues that HD brings with it (just ask the people at WQED). Until HD starts popping up in automobiles in 2009 it just isn't worth the hassle.

"First off, thanks for checking us out. As for HD, that may be something we'll explore further on down the pike, but right now we're concentrating on doing our best with what we have. Our WBUT plays country, and we're satisfied with the direction our other two stations are taking. We're doing really well now, and we're continuing our efforts to get even better.
