Does WYAY Make WSB Sound Better?

It SEEMS that AN106.7 has caused WSB to take on a slightly more mature and professional sound for their morning news. WSB, which also now places the FM freq before the AM in their ID, doesn't yell at you and load up the time with needless promos like they used to do. I believe they have cut back on a few sounders, too.

(However, I may just be getting used to it - I hope that's not happening!)

So, what do you think? Does WSB actually sound like they have a slightly more professional approach to news than they did a few months ago?

No. IMHO their stories are quick snippets or "headlines". I like the 106.7 way of giving a bit more time and detail to the news. I prefer the more laid-back delivery.

I will throw in another question. Does it feel like there are more commercials on WYAY or WSB in the morning?

I think it sounds like WYAY has more commercials. I know this may or may not be true. I think it is dues to all of the sounders and the segmented way the news is presented. It comes across as a lot of one or two minute separate shows that have lots of commercials. Example: The business "show" comes on with a sounder/imager and 60 seconds of business. Then, 120 seconds of commercial. I am sure WSB is doing the same, but it just does not feel like there are as many commercials.

I am wondering if the changes to the WSB morning show contribute to this feeling on the commercials?

I haven't noticed a difference in WSB's morning news content and delivery, but I have noticed a difference in the aggressiveness of the imaging on the station, a lot of it seemingly aimed at 106.7.

Right. WYAY has marketed itself specifically as "the station where you never having to guess when to tune in" or "you don't have to sit through thirty minutes of opinion to hear a fact." WSB, on the other hand, has marketed themselves for the Traffic "every six minutes- not on the sixes" and for their "experienced news team" (even though it has been extremely cut back over the past few years.

You could debate which station is better all day long, but I think it will eventually become clear that some people WANT to hear El Rushbo/Hannity/Cain scream in their face first, then hear the news. Certainly, I think a lot of people DON'T want to do that, and AN1067 will be those people's station. It might just take 2-3 years to figure that all out (and it seems like Cumulus does in fact want to see what happens with All News.)

I'm just trying to compare morning news here; WSB doesn't exist after 9AM. ;D

That is what my comments about advertising for referring to. Comparing the two morning shows.I do think you're right in that WSB has made some changes.it has changed the way the morning news feels and that is what led me to the advertising question.

I noticed today during Herman Cain, Rush, and Eric Erickson that WSB was referring to themselves as "all news". I think they meant their morning show before Herman, but they really tried to suggest they were all news, all the time.

If we were still a diary market, that would cause trouble.
And Cox could go suing Cumulus like they did Susquehanna over WSB 99FM vs. WARM 99.7 30 years ago. Google "Cox Communications v. Susquehanna Broadcasting".

Back in the '90s, WGST had a morning news program, but they called themselves "Newsradio" and "The News Monster". That didn't imply they were 24-hr. news.

I guess it hangs on WSB's definition of the word "all". ("Yep. We got all the news here, so what's da problem?" ;))

The short answer is Yes, competition does make for better content/presentation, 680 and 790 are better due to 92.9. In some cases 790 and 680 have higher ratings now than before the Game launched. For News WSB remains the first choice followed by WABE which is very respectable in mornings with WYAY the market's 3rd choice.

The diff with WSB recently is that they kept saying "all news".

IMHO AN106.7 did one thing I personally can be thankful for. It was not a week after the launch, of All News 106.7 that WSB slowed down their traffic reports from an auctioneer chant.

Yeah... their traffic reports did cause people to speed. Not good. :)

Comparing WSB Radio's morning news with AN 106.7 is like comparing apples to oranges. I prefer WSB, because the content is better. AN 106.7 could do a better job if they would loosen from their stiff clock format and replace their mornig "anchors." I listen to Greg Black and Melissa Carter in the afternoons, because WSB Radio programs nationally syndicated talk and Erick Erickson, but refuse to listen to AN 106.7 in the AM.
