Gees, it's like the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" has taken over our local radio leaving it in some kind of zombie state.

Didn't the Morning Zoo begin their gig at Gator? No response on this board. I thought that would be pretty big news. Has this been promoted? My TV viewing is way down this time of year so if ads are running, please enlighten me.

And the last time I checked the WEJZ website, Greg Parker is still listed as temporarily filling in. What is it 6 months or so Ed Fairbanks left WEJZ? Yeah, I know money is tight for the talent but one would think with so many displaced radio folks, someone would have jumped at the opportunity.

And over at The Eagle, the midday jock is not even mentioned in their website. I'm assuming Cox Radio is writing off middays?? And if what I heard shortly after Scott Walker left is still on the air - I can only hope improvement was made. The guy sounded so out of breath. Talking 2 minutes an hour I guess is harder than I thought.

Of course, we've been waiting for years for something to happen at Rooster and The Point. I guess nothing will happen any time soon.

But really, I think the listener has been so conditioned to not expect much from radio anymore and radio certainly meets those expectations. Maybe I expect too much, but it would be so cool to hear someone actually sound like they were having fun on the air.
 
Yes, the old Zoo started at Gator on 6/20, and it was well covered by the news channels and the paper's website, along with articles in the T/U, Buzz, and Entertaining U. As far as TV ad runs are concerned, why spend the money when it wont be reflected in the ratings? The summer book ended the week they started, and the fall book is far enough off that no one would remember the ads by then. Besides, look at the foolish lampooning Boomer & Robbie did on their 15 second forays into stupidity! That was just throwing noodles at the wall to see what would stick.
As far as Cox Radio goes, Eagle and Point are little more than bloody jukeboxes and are like the proverbial tree in the forest ... if they fall, do they make noise if there's no one around to hear it?
CC is in the midst of upheaval, and QIK's jocks are being hamstrung by bad liner writing & delivery ... they are being squeezed out by a company that will unload them at the drop of a hat. Keep thosecosts down so prospective buyers can see a larger profit margin.
One day the Evil Empires will destroy each other, and in their wake maybe radio can go back to what it once was.
 
Speaking of larger profit margins Brother Bear, I still find myself scratching my head at some of the decisions over the past couple years just in this market alone. And talk about how some stations have been pretty much abandoned by their owners to just barely have any life left in them is just not good business sense to me. There's so little fire and fight to win.

And so now the big buzz is oldies. Perhaps a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. And so now the suits are witnessing the better than originally thought numbers/PP1 for stations such as Phillie's WOGL. And the thousands of posts across the country that questioned the logic and business decision of dropping heritage oldies CBS-FM that was still billing some 30+ million a year to a format like Jack that virtually had no history has (ONCE AGAIN) proven avid radio fans and enlightened in the business folks were right. And of course the big news is today's version of oldies will return to NYCs airwaves once again. About time!

I invite you to go to any city of choice on this board and you will find posts regarding oldies. The format still has a great following AND how many times have you heard me say this - if programmed correctly and allowed to have some personality-today's version can and does deliver respectable 25-54s. It can be sold. When I listen to what is going on in other markets - I keep saying - why not here?

Which brings me back to this pathetic radio market. Renda's WKQL could have been a winner. No one will ever convince me otherwise. They blew it and we discussed the "whys" to to a point of nausea. Potential long term profit out the door. And so they choose to go with something that does not have a proven track record. Another good business decision.

Someone in this market should smell the coffee and conclude there is potential with the format. Stations like Eagle continue to win by default. With Rooster, I don't even know why they bother turning on the transmitter.

Folks, thanks for listening to my rants. But it's time to shake things up here and give the listener more choice and personality. I really miss the old gang from Cool 96.9. So often I hear Dave Scott doing commercial voiceovers on the tube and again I have to scratch my head and wonder why a guy like that who would be so perfect for AM drive is off the air. I just don't get it.
