dollar a holler wsm?

right now at 1:54 am sunday morning 650 is playing a radio preacher? talking about diffrent religions. ? has wsm always done this or is this a first? i have never heard preaching on wsm. not even on sunday mornings?

I know WSM has run the Nashville Cowboy Church broadcast at 5am CT on Sunday morning for awhile. They may be hollerin' but I bet it for more than a dollar. I know that when the decision to remove the Religious programming from WLAC ( remember when it used to start at 9PM?) some of those guys were paying 50-100K per year or more.

I think wsm ran garner ted Armstrong on sunday nite at one time and it might have been for years. Sunday morning and sunday night I think was religion too. wlac just about went religon all the time back in the 1980s they ran religion all nite an made more money than the rest of the day on those talk shows more then 100k per mo clear. Was owned by a man from illinois named sudbrink that maks me wonder what ever happened to les jameson that worked on wlac am 1510. i knew a lot of those people over there but they are all gone or dead i think but see one of those fellow name on here sometimes. what I was saying tho Wsm runs less preachers now than it has in past times.

at 2am they played an infomercial for some health stuff. and the dollar a holler i heard was an actal preacher. not the cowboy church. which is also broadcast on xm 13. on their website it said now playing religiois programming 1am-12pm?? i didnt listen anymore after the infomercial.

Jameson has passed away. I don't remember exactly when, but it seems like it's been within the last 10 years.

Les developed cancer and died in late 97 if I remember correctly. Very nice man and had several careers.

As long as I can remember, WSM-AM has ran religious programming on Sunday morning and Sunday nights. I think most of it on Sunday morning was more gospel songs and hymns, but I know that some church services were being broadcast on Sunday nights of WSM. I'm not sure when they start airing religious programming on Sundays, but they have been doing for years.

I grew up in the Knoxville area and as recently as the early eighties, WOKI was the only Knoxville area station that DID NOT have religious programming on Sunday mornings. Even the rock station, WIMZ, carried the church services of a local Knoxville church on Sunday mornings until 1983 or so. I'm sure a lot of the Nashville station on both AM and FM were carrying religious programming on Sunday mornings until the early eighties or so.

It's not all about programming, it's about the all mighty $$$$$$. If somebody walks in and offers good money to have thier Church Services on Sunday Morning, you have to be an idiot to turn down the money!

I hate for some of you on this board to become station owners. You would go broke within 8 months to a year! Hey Watt, explain to them how important it is to make money with a station. Formats (especially on AM) don't mean crap! Take the money and RUN!

Currents on WSM

Has anyone noticed that 650 WSM is NOW playing currents? This started in the last few days. New direction in programming or last ditch effort to save the format?

NEW PD!!!

Sam Easley joins WSM-AM/Nashville as the venerable country station's new
OM, announced today by the station's GM Chris Kulick and Gaylord
Entertainment senior VP of media & entertainment, Steve Buchanan.

Easley joins WSM from a programming position at Cromwell's WQZQ and
WBUZ/Nashville, and replaces former PD Brian Landrum, who left the station
in March 2005.

Is this why they've added currents?

Well, we'll take any kind of an explanation. More pay to play like on the Grand Ole Opry?

It seems to me if revenue were the central concern , WSM would have gone in a different direction like all the big guns have done like wsb , wwl and host of others that no longer offer music formats but make big bucks . So , your pay for play accusation or payola has little or no merrit at all . I can't agree with their business principals , but can respect and admire their dedication too a format inspite of all the odds. 80 years ago , WSM chose to support Grand Ole Opry and they stuck to it and even caved in to public opinion at one point .

I'm not accusing WSM of anything. I'm a huge fan of that radio station.

But I can tell you first hand, that the Opry has record labels pay them to let an artist appear on the Opry. And the legends continue to be mistreated!
