Don Bleu Segues From KIOI To KKSF

Longtime CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KIOI (K101)/SAN FRANCISCO morning fixture DON BLEU will be crossing the hallway to do mornings on sister Oldies KKSF. After over 22 years at 101.3 FM, BLEU will start his new gig on JANUARY 3rd, 2012.

Bleu must not be retiring, then. My impression was that he was taking it a year at a time, and had considered hanging it up more than once. He's well into his 60s, and as the Bay Area's highest paid DJ for a number of years, I doubt he needs to work.

But I can't imagine Clear Channel is going to this trouble - having Don "be the catalyst in establishing another heritage San Francisco brand..." if they thought he was going to retire anytime soon.

Folks:

Althought I don't mind Don Bleu, I'd rather have Dean Goss or someone else from the former KFRC/KYA'KSFO oldies stations.

I've never been a Bleu fan either. I don't find his show particularly amusing or entertaining. On the other hand, I don't find him repugnant either - like many of those 'Morning/Zoo/Doghouse/Push the Envelope' type offerings.

But that's just me - Don has logged 22 years at 101.3, and (don't recall exactly) at least 5 or more years at 99.7 (KYUU and X-100) before that. So he's been a major name in Bay Area radio for almost 3 decades - that has to count for something.

As for Dean Goss - a good yeoman DJ, but nothing more than that, in my opinion. I never found Goss & Garrett very interesting, and I avoided Cammy & Dean...though that was because of the Cammy factor.

I can understand why Clear Channel is going for the big name at 103.7. And I don't think CC cares in the slightest about employing old veteran Top 40 DJs on their Oldies station. Celeste Perry is as close as they've come, and she only provides about 2 minutes of voice-tracked content per hour.

Don Bleu always said he would never do Oldies....Never say Never Don

Regarding Lkeller opinion of Goss and Garrett. They did have the best morning numbers in the history of KFRC being on 99.7 it was a popular show. Note I said 99.7 not to be confused with the Doctor Don years on KFRC 610

I didn't say that Goss & Garrett weren't popular - only that I didn't find them particularly compelling. And if they were so popular, why did CBS move them to Young Country (93.3), and promote the horrifying Ron & Cammy to mornings on KFRC? Why would you move a big hit to your 'minor league' franchise, so to speak?

What's playing on 103.7 is not oldies by any stretch of anyone's imagination! Get Real. Classic Hits Yes!

Oh, it's oldies. No doubt about it.

This was discussed when 103.7 flipped from Classic Rock (The Band) to Classic Hits. I believe it was David E who made the distinction between "Oldies" as a classification for radio formats (no, 103.7 is not that), and "Oldies" as a brand name for the station. Most listeners don't know or care that 103.7 isn't Oldies as defined by radio programmers. To them, it's 'old' music, so the brand fits.

Because Goss and Garret didn't get promoted to 93.3 they were the morning show on the station already when 93.3 flipped to Young Country from KYA-FM. I'm sure I'm not the only one that recorded the flip as Elvis left the building!

When they left Young Country they went back to KFRC and that's when t was owned by CBS. The gal left the show and another gal Karen came on for a while then they split that team and that's when Ron and Cammy went to mornings on KFRC from afternoons. Goss went to Country again in the mornings and when Parker left Dean Came back with Cammy. OMG you need a program to follow this.

Cammy and Dean to Star 101.3???

I wouldn't mind doing mornings at Star 101.3 myself. I will consider applying for this position!

With the exit of Don Bleu from Star, does this make KIOI, a 100% voice tracked/syndicated station?

Since morning-drive shows are the big thing, I imagine Clear Channel will bring in a live DJ or some kind of morning team for Star. Part of their agenda in moving Don Bleu (the unspoken part) might be that they want somebody for mornings who is younger - to match the demographics of the station. Don probably relates better to baby boomers and people in their 40s, who have stuck with him over the past decades.

If you're old enough, think back to the glory days of AM Top 40 radio in the 60s and 70s - or even CHR FM radio of the 80s. Most jocks were in their 20s and 30s - you could have probably found just a few in their 40s - but I doubt you could have found any in their mid 60s.

I'm guessing that Alex Bennett probably hit his mid-50s toward the end of his time on Live 105, but he's about the only exception I can think of.

I just thought of a good comparison to Don Bleu - "Emperor" Gene Nelson, who started in Top 40 at KYA as a young man, then moved over to MOR radio in his middle age. When the MOR format died in the 80s, he finished his career at KSFO/KYA-FM, which played "Rock and Roll Classics"....Oldies, in other words. I remember reading that the PD at KSFO/KYA in those days refused to use the word "Oldies" because it sounded...old. I believe Gene was a bit younger than Don is now when he retired in the 90s.

Interesting bit of trivia - Gene was hired by 1260/KYA in 1965 to replace morning man Bill Drake, because the station wanted Drake to concentrate on his PD duties.

Really on the 'no oldies?' Hmmm. I was there when Gene was, and we had a liner by Bobby Ocean that said "GREAT Oldies!" The jocks also did a liner saying 'the oldies authority.' That was over the course of 2 PD's there.

Maybe that changed over the course of the format, or between the 1st and 2nd PD. But I recall the "Rock and Roll Classics" slogan, and a matching jingle. By the time KSFO and KYA split up (KSFO went Talk and KYA stayed with Oldies), I do recall that the "O" word was in full use.

Bill Drake was LONG gone from KYA in 1965....1962 was when he left?
