I was saddened to hear of the tragic death of Don Cornelius this morning. I was on active duty 1968-69, stationed in the Chicago area, and listened to WVON more than any other station. I remember Cornelius as a newscaster on the station during that time. I was pleased to see that he went on to become a national celebrity.

If I'm reading this correctly, there was a time in the 70's that both Channel 2 and Channel 26 were airing "Soul Train" at the same time?

Yes. The show on channel 26 was the original show. Don left the show and started a nationally syndicated version of the show out on the west coast produced at KTTV-11 in Los Angeles. The national show was seen in Chicago on WGN and later on WBBM. The local version
continued on channel 26 with a local host named Clinton Chent (sp).
