Don Elliot Heald, RIP

All of us here at Day1 are mourning the death of an Atlanta media giant, Don Elliot Heald.

Though Don Heald was known in the Atlanta Metro area more for his outstanding work at WSB TV, he got his start on the radio side at WSB. Also, for 50 years he served as the host of the national Protestant Hour radio program, which changed its name to Day1 in 2002 (and is still broadcast locally on WSB AM on Sunday mornings at 7:05). Don also served on the board of our parent organization for many years as well. Another aspect of his work with our organization was his voiceover work for the live Christmas Eve broadcast from the Cathedral of St. Philip over WSB TV. Don would come in and record the script and we'd run the various cuts during the live broadcast. He'd been so ill we didn't think he would be able to do it again this past December, but he felt good enough one day in mid-December to come to our studio and record it. As usual, he did a fantastic job--he had such a wonderfully rich voice. He was tickled to be able to do that again.

We will miss Don's leadership, his wisdom, and his warm friendship here at Day1. We want to extend our sympathy to his family and his many colleagues and friends.
