Don Keyes is gone

As many of you know, Don Keyes was there at the birth of Top 40 radio joining KLIF as a disc jockey before being named programming czar of Gordon McLendon’s chain of radio stations.

For those of you who don't, he paved the way for you to be on the air, today's radio professional.

That's just too sad. Don was a great guy, with lots and lots of wonderful stories to tell. Sorry now that I hadn't talked to him in a couple of years. His very first radio job was at KGKO, who had 1480 before KBOX did. McLendon came a-callin' one day, and the rest is history. Hopefully he put his recollections to paper somewhere. We could all be inspired (or even saddened, to see what radio once was vs. what it's become.)

Sorry to hear about Don. Do you know if Johnny Dark, the world's oldest intern on the Letterman show, is the same Johnny Dark that was on KLIF? I believe his real name is Johnny Borders.

Don Keyes was class pure class. He did radio,when it was radio. Twidget, Borders is owner of a group of stations now based in Ariz.

Can't remember if Keyes helped McLendon forge the 20/20 news format. Keyes was part of so many innovations in radio, One loses track of his myriad accomplishments.

Didn't know him, but knew of him, great guy. Steve Eberhart's KLIF(1190)pages, already has a tribute on Don. Very Interesting.

First time I found that site, I was there at least a couple of hours. Great stuff.
