Mr. Feely from "Three's Company." The TV repairman in "Pleasantville."
One of the troupe from "The Tonight Show" with Steve Allen.

But he'll always be Barney to me. I'm glad we've still got the re-runs and the DVDs.

Furley. Ralph Furley, the landlord. He joined the cast of Three's Company around 1979 after Stanley and Helen Roper moved on to their own failed spinoff.

He also did a great job in that "Desparate Housewives" spoof in the 2005 TV Land Awards. He'll really be missed.

I bet he's sharing stories right now with good ol' Aunt Bee and Jack Tripper.

An interesting background look at some of Don's TV shows...

A Barney moment: "There's only one way to deal with this, Andy. You gotta nip it in the budd. Nip it, nip it, nip it."

Andy: "You mean I gotta nip it......"

Barney: "In the budd."

The death of Don Knotts truly marks the closing of another historic era in American television.

Goodbye Barney; Thanks for all the laughs

I once read an article by the author of a book about Hollywood celebrities. While this person trashed a number of well known actors for being rude, nasty and self-centered, he had nothing but praise for Don Knotts.

According to the author, unlike many egotists who populate the world of show business Knotts, was a kind-hearted soul who would always sign an autograph, pose for a picture, or go out of his way to talk with his many fans. The article went on to say that Sheriff Andy was always the calm and cool one, while Deputy Barney was uptight and nervous. In real life it was the opposite for both actors.

One has to give Andy Griffith credit for allowing Don Knotts’s character to be the focal point of Griffith’s TV show. Many leading actors would never have stood by and allowed someone else to get the laughs and attention that Knotts did. But Griffith perhaps understood the impact “Barney Fife” brought to the show, but also because he and Knotts were such close friends.

Don Knotts will always be remembered as Deputy Barney Fife and thank goodness for that. Don was nominated and won five Emmy awards in the 1960s. Now consider this, the “Great One”, Jackie Gleason never won an Emmy and yet here was a supporting cast member of a popular show who had five awards to his credit.

Thanks Don for all of the laughs and wonderful memories. You will be missed.
______________

Mr. Knotts also co-starred with Tim Conway in "The Apple Dumpling Gang" as a pair of bumbling bankrobbers. He eventually reunited with Andy Griffith in several episodes of "Matlock". I heard somewhere that prior to his career in showbiz, he was a marine drill instructor. I'm not sure if there's any truth to that, though.
______________
