Don Lancer

He made his mark at 1060 KYW, Philadelphia, but years before that many will remember Don Lancer from the time he spent as an anchor and field reporter at WKBW radio. Known for his outstanding pipes, great writing and superb delivery, Radio-Info reports the passing of Don Lancer, all too soon at the age of 68. RIP.

Wow. First of all, it's hard to believe that he was "only" 68. That's way too young to go these days. RIP, Don.

Let's dedicate the "Martini Edition" of WKBW Total News to the memory of Don Lancer. He'll forever be immortalized in our town with his "performance" on KB's "War of the Worlds."

Amen to that, Phil! And you don't read about this happening too often, "In 2008, when word came down from corporate that there needed to be layoffs at KYW, Lancer stepped up and sacrificed his own job to save another."

I first heard Don Lancer in Syracuse before his time at KB.  I believe it was WOLF that he worked at in the Salt City.  Always highly stylized - very much in the tradition of Weinstein, Brach & Zack...Don was a perfect fit for the KB newsroom .

"In 2008, when word came down from corporate that there needed to be layoffs at KYW, Lancer stepped up and sacrificed his own job to save another."

Probably the first time that nugget of news got out---since IIRC, CBS at the time called Lancer's departure a simple retirement.
He'll be remembered for setting the high energy, high intensity style and tone of KB news through the 60s and into the 70s--definitely following in the tradition started by Irv Weinstein.
