Don Markwell Passes Away

For those of you who weren't aware - Don Markwell - a true radio personality for nearly a half century - notably on Montgomery's WCOV and then WACV, passed away Friday from an extended illness.

Wow. Saddened by this. He was a kind and generous gentleman.

Mr. Markwell and I crossed paths a few times in my career. He was always a straight shooter and you knew exactly where you stood with him. About 25 years ago, I was working at WRJM in Troy.
Don was GM and ran the station for the most part from his Montgomery office. You didn't see him at the studio everyday. I was on duty one Saturday evening when I heard the front door unlock followed by the sound of of someone coming up the spiral metal staircase leading to the upstairs studio. In walks Don (or so I thought) and we began chatting about the station and my show. Something is weird. It looks like Don, but he doesn't sound like himself. Next thing I know, another Don comes thru the control room door! Who knew the guy had a twin brother! Don had sent him up first just to mess with my head. We all had a big laugh about it. They might have looked alike, but there was only ONE Don Markwell (what a voice)! RIP, boss. I wish I had known you longer! Tom (O'Brien) Smith
