Don McCoy

Don McCoy and his wife are buying or have bought a staiton in South Georgia that could be a Tallahassee competitor? Anybody know more on this?

The station they are buying is WGWD-FM 93.3, licensed to Gretna, Fla. It has been a classic country station for many years. It's a rimshot station to Tallahassee, but the signal is fairly decent over much of the area.

Personally, I think Tallahassee is over-radioed, for the most part. However, WGWD has generally maintained a 2 share or better and has been classic country for close to 20 years. It has a pretty loyal core audience.

Having worked in Tallahassee radio for 20-plus years, I can assure you it's not going to be easy to make it a Tallahassee station. That will leave Gadsden County with basically no local radio service.

... but isn't Gadsden county to poorest county in the state of Florida? Pretty good reason to move the station closer to Tallahassee.. or even north into Georgia could be a plus.

I've owned and operated radio stations since 1986. I have always done better financially in markets with middle to low income citizens. They are more loyal to the stations and to local businesses where we generate our revenue.

It's a proven fact that higher income and higher educated people are much more difficult to motivate with advertising than others.

One of the best radio sales trainers I've come accross, the late Jim Williams, used to say "make your money in places where all people do is work and sleep. Then, you can afford to vacation and visit whereever you want."

There is a lot of truth to that statement.

Depends on what you're trying to motivate them to purchase.
A message which creates a perceived need or desire will work with any segment of society.
Where has this been proven as "fact?"
