Because they contain more than one musician?

A quick check of the encyclopedia shows "band" is an accepted word for a collection of individuals in a number of areas. A Native American group, a collection of radio frequencies, a group of coyotes, the range of electron energies within which current can flow -- it certainly seems reasonable to call any collection of more than one musician a "band".
