Donny Osmond Middays On 106.7?

Citadel is going to be launching a new midday talk show with the former child star and reigning Dancing With The Stars champion. Will launch in two weeks on "60 stations," according to the press release. Doesn't list which ones, but with Citadel no doubt wishing to clear as many Top 10 markets as possible, would anyone be surprised if he turns up on Atlanta's True Oldies Channel?

I know someone who might be wetting their pants over this. To think of the immense TALENT!!!!!!! coming to True Oldies. What will happen to Scott Shannon? Is he leaving True Oldies. Will we no longer have 25,000 song playlists??????

What exactly is a "lifestyle-driven music radio show"?

The press releases says it will be geared to classic hits and AC. We have two such stations but they are owned by Cox. I don't think Captain Purple will be on the air here.

True Oldies without Scott Shannon is kinda like Tony Soprano without a handgun.

On the other hand, you could possibly stick the show in the 7 PM-midnight time slot on a tape delay...

My understanding is that around 30 of the 60 stations are via Citadel Media's "Hits and Favorites" 24 hour format.

This whole thing is idiotic.

The skills required to be a compelling radio host have NOTHING to do with TV or recorded music.

I know, I used to do TV in addition to radio, and it's a whole "nuther thing"...

Osmond may indeed succeed, but let's be clear--our craft is that indeed--a CRAFT, requiring no special education or certification, but at the same time some kind of understanding about what's needed to make a radio show work.

This isn't something that can be immediately transferred. One of the things that drives me nuts is the idea that radio is somehow EASY--it's NOT. It requires immersion in the skillset; understanding of the requirements; a clear idea about how to compel users to stay with you over and through stopsets and other means by which the media world hangs us up.

I've met Donny Osmond and he's smart, so he may indeed succeed. But it takes smarts and the "unknown quantity" to make a radio personality who sticks--then, on top of that, someone who gets the way the PPM world works, and can adjust accordingly.

Good luck, Donny. This will be MUCH harder than doing a TV variety show with your sister....
