He read this letter on the air this morning from CC's Chris Kampmeier. In case you missed it, here it is again.

Hi all,
As many of you already know, Bubba The Love Sponge is expected to bring his syndicated morning show to WHTQ beginning January 5th. This represents a significant change in the makeup of the market and may, in time, impact a number of stations, including some of ours.
His history in the Orlando market is very thin:
1. He did nights on XL many, many years ago
2. He was on JRR for 8-9 months 5 years ago
3. He's been heard on Sirius for the past few years

He will be starting out with a tiny audience and you have an important role to play in keeping it tiny. His standard ploy is to talk about other stations and personalities and sucker them into talking about him on their shows and websites. This is how he builds interest in and awareness for his show…his #1 priority early in the game. WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING HIS GAME AND WE WILL NOT HELP HIM BY TELLING OUR LISTENERS ABOUT HIS SHOW.
We WILL be waging war in a number of off-air ways employing many of the tactics that helped JRR demolish O'Rock. Please follow these guidelines precisely and at all times until you are directed differently:
1. There is to be no mention of Bubba The Love Sponge and/or any other changes at HTQ in any of your on-air content, live or produced.
2. Same goes for your website and your personality pages.
3. Do not respond to any press inquiries regarding Bubba The Love Sponge and/or changes at HTQ without permission and direction from your PD or me or Linda.
4. This e-mail is a private and confidential communication between your employer and you. I expect it to stay private. No Radio-Info, no Scott Maxwell, no sharing with former employees who now work for the competition. This e-mail is part of our War Tactics and should be shared with no one outside of your team.
5. DO NOT BE A SUCKER!!

Let me know if you have any questions and let's show Bubba and HTQ how good our stations are at waging war and satisfying our listeners!!
Chris

Oh wait...this wasn't supposed to be posted. Guess I'm a sucker too. ;)

that is crazy. i am going to laugh when bubba kills those hacks lex and terry in the ratings... i hope he does. i have not listened to btls on whtq yet. hell i haven't listened to any corperate radio in months. i have boycotted the radio for a long time.... sorry, this is going way off topic but i hope bubba wins :).

when will management learn????

1) never send out something like this in WRITING...have a meeting and VERBALLY get your point across....and

2) challenge those who get it NOTto post it.....

Let's hope when CC starts budget cuts, he is one of the first to go....

This just in........TC dooley has ask the Monsters to change the name of one of their castmates from 'Bubba' to 'Redd Kneck' to avoid confusion with the host of the not-to-be-named morning show that just moved in.

thanks

This is the best post I've seen on Radio-Info in quite some time. The fact he even mentions this web site is hysterical. CLASSIC management move... I love it!!!

Who cares about beating Lex & Terry, I hope that BTLS beats those no-talent hacks THE MONSTERS!!!!!!

Let's get rid of THOSE GUYS!!!!!

oh yeah. forgot about the monsters. how the hell could i do that? and yeah, i can't believe that guy mentioned this site. ahhahah that is great. oh well, like they say, shit happens and it did :). i hope he sees it posted here. that would be funny as well.

I heard him talking about this again today on the air, along with the "Grid" concept CC is rumored to be utilizing in the determination (or just termination?) of staff and talent during their planned upcoming restructuring. What a great "your eyes only" type of memo to let get out there... Precious.

This letter shows how awful this company really is. They say that they will use the same tactics that JRR used to demolish O-rock in stopping BTLS... I wonder how some former O-rock jocks who now work at JRR think of that statement??????.....

I would be pissed and would say something....

I really hope that Bubba the Love dude gives The monsters a LOT to worry about.....

Somebody should go over to the Clear Channel headquarters in Maitland and decorate the building with WHTQ stickers and Bubba posters....

What would REALLY be great.....somebody should take the WHTQ van and park and park it IN the parking lot...

;D

I know I may be biased when I say this, but I really do like Bubba's style. I was fortunate to hear him on the way to Daytona for jury duty (seems a bit ironic, don't you think? LOL). I really enjoyed listening to him, and surprised of what he's done in the past. Sure, he's an "in-your-face, one-of-the-guys" jock, and naturally won't attract the female side of the audience. All things aside, I actually laughed my butt off listening to him. Of course, I'm a first-time listener, so I'm not one to judge. I really see big changes happening in the numbers with BTLS and WHTQ. We'll just have to wait and see.

WJRR has been floundering the last quarter... and there's no excuse since 105.9 flipped... I'm sorry, I mean was "demolished by JRR". I told you months ago that if Cox put Bubba on WHTQ and they got their music direction straight they'd easily overtake WJRR in 2009. To KampFIRED and the the others in Maitland: Welcome to 2009! And now the more I think about it, I think WTKS is gonna be in trouble too. Good luck!!!

PS.... Can't wait for the next memo!!!!!!!

You forgot #4: He did nights on WFLZ, back when "The Power Pig" was arguably THE hottest CHR in the nation.

Before the FCC began allowing FM translators on every damn channel, WFLZ put a listenable signal into most of the Orlando metro. Many Orlando folks (including myself) listened to "The Pig" because it was FAR superior to XL106.7 during that era.

So yeah, BTLS is quite familiar to many Orlandoites who were in their teens and twenties during the early 90s.

It is nice to see WHTQ ahead of WJRR in the last book....(I am a fan of both stations, I just get ticked when WJRR tends to overplay Korn and I get ticked when WHTQ turns into WHTJOEWALSHQ..). Yea, BTLS has a thin history in the Orlando market....whatever....

Who told you that??????...

Anybody that has been involved in radio in the Orlando market since '89 knows EXACTLY who this guy is..

Ironically, his show on WXXL was great....

Why hasn't the Fiasco with Pat Lynch and Taco Bob been mentioned for afternoons???

Those 2 shows together would put any (male-targeted) station to bed.

I wonder how some former O-rock jocks who now work at JRR think of that statement??????.....

Probably that for the most part, he's right. As soon as O-Rock started doing anything of significance, 101.1 changed to confuse the everyday listener. The switch to Real Rock was engineered to piggy back off the enormous (at the time) popularity of Real Radio. The idea was that if someone heard a song that the two stations shared, and was also aware of Real Radio, that they would think automatically that Real Rock and O-Rock were pretty much the same, and write down Real Rock or 1011. For a while, JRR was never mentioned except as part of the hourly ID. I personally witnessed people with diaries put down "Real Rock 1059" when they were listening to O-Rock. Or just 1011. Which was an O-Rock thing too. They changed their logo to resemble O-Rock, they hired a voice guy to sound just like the voice guy at O-Rock (at first, then there were changes by both), they dropped the point in 101.1 just like 1059. Their jocks used first names or just their jock name like O-Rock. The entire switch from playing Ozzy and Nine Inch Nails to Alien Ant Farm and Nine Inch Nails was all about confusion for the listener. I'll never forget the first time Pat Lynch said "Hoobastank" and "Jimmy Eat World" and had to sound excited about playing them after ridiculing O-Rock for that exact type of music.

They analyzed the drops used on O-Rock and if anything was royalty free, they'd use it in a drop just to sound like O-Rock. Right down to the background voice drops and music. The concept of a band coming into town and calling it "An O-Rock Show" was used, and rightfully so.

Drops calling bands exclusive (although none were, really) to the station ala "this is O-Rock music" was used by Real Rock. Giving away Mystery Show bands before the mystery was up, threatening to never play bands again if they appeared at a Mystery show has been alleged.

While O-Rock floundered and tried to find a singular identity, Real Rock stole it, ran with it and tried to confuse the listener. They succeeded. Then, they turned a harder edge to differentiate the two and never looked back, because O-Rock was in a constant state of identity crisis. Do they have personalities or button pushers? Are the newly able "personalities" talk show hosts, or DJs? Does O-Rock play new stuff, old stuff, edgy stuff, tame stuff, play-it-by-the-numbers or mix it all together? Do they "play what you want" or are they "the Howard Stern Station?"

No one ever knew. Because O-Rock wasn't allowed to be any of those for too long without switching up.

So, yeah...Real Rock helped the destruction of O-Rock but the station did a fine job of hiring the guy to make the casket, draw out a short will and shoot it in the head all by itself.
